Windermere Airshow

Lakelovers in recent years have been and continue to be regular sponsors of The Rotary Club of Windermere in conjunction with the annual Windermere Airshow

The organisers of this hugely popular event can confirm the RAF has announced that the Red Arrows Aerobatics Display Team will once again be displaying at Windermere Airshow as part of the RAF's Thank You Displays. Alan Katz of The Rotary Club of Windermere says “We are delighted as the Reds add hugely to the overall spectacle in the years that they are able to come, but at other times we have different and exhilarating displays from the wide variety of aircraft available from both the RAF and civilian aviation.” The total cost of staging the Airshow is likely to be about £30,000. Alan Katz says “it is not clear how crucial the Red Arrows are to a successful show but the general message from the community is that they wish to see the Red Arrows appear at regular and frequent intervals. We will not be offered the Red Arrows each year even if cost were no object. We had an excellent and successful show last year with alternative aerobatic displays including the “Yakovlevs.”

The RAF say that with over 1500 applications for the Red Arrows and other RAF aircraft participation in events across the UK and abroad, it is not possible to guarantee a Red Arrows display every year. Alan Katz says that “expanding Windermere Airshow to include other types of aerobatic displays as we did in 2008, allows us to build a bigger and better event for the future." So Rotary will work with the community to rise to that challenge and thanks the RAF for bringing the Red Arrows to Windermere again this year. Crucial is the support of the Local Authorities and local businesses led by Lakelovers”. Considerable sums are raised over the weekend for The Great North Air Ambulance and many other charities.

The RAF has provided Windermere with exciting displays over the past few years and Carol Bell, Regional Community Relations Officer for the RAF has told us "The RAF, and in particular the Red Arrows, always look forward to supporting and displaying at this fantastic event. Windermere Airshow has blossomed into one of the most popular Airshows in our region, with the number of visitors continuing to expand year on year. This can only be down to the very hard work of the Rotary Club and the volunteers who continue to put their all into this event and the charitable causes which benefit from their hard work." This year’s Show will be over the weekend of 23rd & 24th July and the organisers say “ it will be one of Cumbria’s biggest events of the year. Whether you want historic aircraft like Spitfires or aerobatics such as The Red Arrows Windermere is the place to be this Summer when an estimated crowd of 30,000 will be staring at the skies over Lake Windermere.”
