Hawkshead is a popular village, always busy and generally traffic free and it is rewarding to explore some of the alleyways and 'yards', often ringed by pretty traditional cottages.
Nearby Esthwaite Water is small and tranquil, mostly due to the few public access points to it. Ambleside is only a short and picturesque drive away, as is Bowness which can be accessed via a car ferry, which is well worth a trip.
The areas' most famous daughter is Beatrix Potter, and you can visit her home 'Hill Top' in Near Sawrey. Take time to explore the village and surrounding countryside, much of it unchanged since her days. The many walks in this area are quite easy to complete and very much worth the effort. There are plenty of good places to eat locally and villagers are more than happy to point you in the direction of excellent fare.
