The Langdale Valley is magnificent and picturesqe, vast and sparsely populated: its vistas must be among the most photographed in Britain.
Walks abound - ranging from long and strenuous hikes to short energetic strolls along low-level paths. Leading west from the valley is a road that crosses over two of the Lake District's steepest passes, Wrynose and Hard Knott, towards the Duddon Valley.
The charming villages of Elterwater and Chapel Stile both have well stocked village shops and pleasant traditional pubs to savour. Establishments such as the Three Shires Inn at Langdale and the New & Old Dungeon Ghyll Inns in the Langdale Valley both serve tasty traditional food to hungry fell walkers tired after an energetic day on the windswept tops.
