Windermere is a busy little town and contains the only station for the Lake District at the end of a short single-track line that passes through some similarly picturesque villages.
Several major Lake District tour companies base themselves in Windermere allowing visitors to step off the train and be in easy reach of the region's many other attractions and sights. Windermere is only a mile away from busy Bowness, but still boasts some interesting attractions of its own: various sporting facilities, a riding stable and an 18-hole golf course are all easily accessible.
There are some lovely walks on the rolling fells behind the town. The village also serves as a local shopping centre with a good range of shops as well as a family run supermarket. Dining out is easy too, with a good mix of cafés, pubs and restaurants serving a range of dishes to suit all palates.
