A self-catering cottage in Outgate makes a great base for walking in the Lake District, The Langdale Valley is only a short drive away, overlooked by the famous Langdale Pikes and offering wonderfully scenic valley strolls.
There are also some lovely routes surrounding nearby Hawkshead village, such as Tarn Hows and Easedale Tarn. This picture-postcard village is well worth a visit, a joy to wander around, and In the surrounding countryside you'll explore the landscapes that inspired the author Beatrix Potter. You can also visit her former home, Hill Top at Near Sawrey.
To explore the Lake District's most sophisticated village community, head to Ambleside. There you'll find lose-yourself shops, stylish café culture and endless choice for an evening out. The Glass House is a must for a special celebration, beautifully located within a converted saw mill in the centre of Ambleside village.
You can also stroll to Waterhead Pier to take a cruise on one of Lake Windermere's steamers.
