Dipper Cottage, Coniston

Arrival day: Saturday | Sleeps: 4

VisitEngland 3 star rated property

This rustic cottage-style apartment is one of three within a converted 300 year old mill building, Sunny Bank Mill, taking a beautiful riverside location and boasting access to private frontage on the western shores of Coniston Water. You can launch your own sailing boat, windsurfer or canoe (no power boats are allowed on Coniston), or simply wander through woodland and meadows to the lake shore and soak up the scenery on the delightful private beach. The famous 'Wild Cat Island' from Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons is opposite the beach, and the Coniston Launch calls at a landing point not far away. Dipper Cottage is ideal for family holidays; the carefully thought-out living area provides ample space for sociable days and nights, as well as a family-sized dining table for eating in, and overlooks the pretty beck. In this spell-binding location, couples will find the property a treat for a romantic break.

Accommodation in detail
Dipper Cottage has an upside-down layout over two floors, with entrance at first floor level. The two bedrooms are on the first floor; one double and one twin, as well as the bathroom with shower over bath. A pretty staircase with exposed stone wall leads down to the lower floor living area, taking advantage of the dreamy outlook over the rocky beck. The living area is cosy and full of character, with exposed beams, exposed stone wall, comfy sofas, flat screen TV and dining table for four. If you wish to look at the other two cottages within Sunny Bank Mill they are called Robin Cottage and Wren Cottage.

Location
This Coniston self-catering property with lake access provides a unique opportunity to enjoy the Lake District's third largest lake with the luxury of a private beach. If you haven't brought your own boat, you'll be able to take to the water on row boats, launches or the Victorian steam yacht Gondola from the Coniston pier or boating centres.

A self-catering holiday in Coniston takes you slightly away from the hustle and bustle of Bowness and Lake Windermere, to a wilder landscape full of adventure. Coniston Water is famous for its part in Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons, with Peel Island being the setting for 'Wild Cat Island', featured in the story. The lake is also known for Donald Campbell's water speed record attempt in 'Bluebird'. But the real magic comes from the breathtaking surroundings; dramatic fells including Coniston Old Man, wild woodlands and wonderful Lake District walks.

You'll have access to no end of stunning routes, from leisurely strolls to challenging ascents. You'll enjoy access to the peaceful village centre, well equipped for stocking up the kitchen with traditional butcher and supermarket. There are lovely tea rooms, cafes and traditional Lakeland pubs in Coniston village, and the Black Bull Inn is well worth a visit for its award-winning brewery the Coniston Brewing Co.
For a cultured day out, head to Brantwood historic house - an impressive residence overlooking the lake, once home to John Ruskin the famous artist, writer and creative thinker. You'll find a range of events on offer, such as talks, concerts, craft workshops and even outdoor theatre.
