Location
You couldn't hope for a more convenient location, right at the heart of the Lake District's most sophisticated village community. Families or groups will enjoy their freedom and independence here, even without private transport.
Nestled on the northern shores of Lake Windermere, Ambleside is a charming historic village that has grown to become one of the most vibrant in the Lakes. Popular for its location close to the lake shore and surrounded by dramatic Lakeland Fells, it's easy to see why so many people return year after year to enjoy their favourite form of Lakeland village life!

In the village centre, explore tempting cafes and a wide range of shops - everything from local craft to expert outdoor clothing. Ambleside is home to several acclaimed Lake District restaurants (try the Glass House for a memorable evening out) as well as many affordable cafes and family-oriented options. Ambleside even has two cinemas - the 5-screen Zeffirellis for mainstream films or the interesting Fellinis - a studio cinema with vegetarian restaurant. Perfect for a rainy day!
Within walking distance of Ambleside village centre is Waterhead Pier; the departure point for Windermere Lake Cruises. With regular departures throughout the day, you'll find the elegant 'steamers' or smaller launches a perfect way to explore without a car. The boats travel the full length of the lake, with stops at Bowness and Lakeside.
