Location
Ambleside village takes a scenic location off the northern shores of Lake Windermere, England's largest lake. With a backdrop of dramatic fells and picturesque countryside, the village is a popular base for walking in the Lake District.
But if you don't plan to take the the fells, you'll find plenty to entertain you in this vibrant village community. Explore contemporary shopping streets and high quality cafes, tempting delicatessens and acclaimed Lake District restaurants such as The Glass House - within a beautifully converted saw mill. Ambleside also has two cinemas; Fellinis Vegetarian Restaurant and Studio Cinema, and Zeffirellis Cinema, Pizzeria and Jazz Bar.
Stroll a short distance from the village centre to Waterhead Pier, on the shores of Lake Windermere. There you'll find several excellent eateries overlooking the lake, and the famous Lake Windermere steamers departing regularly from the pier. These memorable cruises provide a car-free route to Bowness and Lakeside - a great way to explore. Evening cruises with buffet meals and live music are also available - check the website for sailing times.
Touring the Lake District is easy from Ambleside's central location on the A591. This road leads south towards family attractions in Bowness, the Troutbeck Valley and dramatic Kirkstone Pass, or north past idyllic Rydal Water to Grasmere - home of William Wordsworth. Hawkshead village and Beatrix Potter's home are also within very easy reach.
