Windermere village also has a number of traditional Lakeland pubs serving real Cumbrian ale and hearty food, as well as relaxed daytime cafes and quirky local shops.
There are many Lake District family attractions in Bowness, which is only a couple of miles down the road from Windermere village. These include the World of Beatrix Potter attraction, hire boats on Lake Windermere, and of course the famous Lake Windermere 'steamers'. Windermere Lake Cruises depart regularly to Ambleside and Lakeside - both well worth a visit during your Lake District holiday. Windermere Golf Club is just outside Bowness.
For exploring further afield, the A591 leads easily north to Ambleside, historic Grasmere and beyond. From Troutbeck Bridge, you can also drive the dramatic Kirkstone Pass, which takes in dramatic scenery on its winding way to Ullswater.
