Ambleside is an attractive Lakeland village on the northern shores of Lake Windermere, England's largest lake. Renowned for its traditional Lakeland cottages and interesting historic buildings such as The Bridge House, the village has grown tastefully to become one of the region's most sophisticated destinations. As you wander the pretty streets, explore contemporary shops, clothing boutiques, tasty eateries and much more. All set against the spectacular backdrop of Lake Windermere's shores and the Lakeland Fells towering above. If you're a walker, you'll be inspired as soon as you arrive and spoilt for the choice of expert outdoor stores - the perfect places to pick up route advice!
Stroll just outside Ambleside village centre and you'll find Lake Windermere cruises departing from the pier at Waterhead. The famous 'steamers' take regular trips the full length of the lake - hop on and hop off at bustling Bowness or peaceful Lakeside (the lake's southern tip). The perfect way to explore or even begin a days walking without having to drive.
Numerous excellent country pubs surround Ambleside, and you'll be tempted to venture out of the village to such acclaimed pub restaurants as the Drunken Duck at Outgate. But for evening entertainment, you'll certainly be spoilt for choice within walking distance of your door in Ambleside village centre. As well as a wide range of restaurants, pubs and bars, Ambleside even has two interesting cinema venues - the 5 screen Zeffirellis mainstream cinema, and Fellinis Studio Cinema and Vegetarian Restaurant.
Touring by car is scenic in every direction from your holiday cottage in Ambleside. Follow the A591 north past tranquil Rydal Water to historic Grasmere, and visit such attractions as the former home of William Wordsworth at Dove Cottage and The Wordsworth Museum. The A591 also leads easily south to Troutbeck Bridge, Windermere and on to Bowness.
Ambleside is a fantastic base whether you wish to hike in the fells, tour the Lake District's scenic areas or simply explore the charms of the local area. Enjoy!
