Location
Ambleside is a popular Lakeland village on the northern shores of Lake Windermere. Attractive with its historic Lakeland stone buildings and winding streets, the village has grown to become one of the most sophisticated destinations in the Lake District.
In the village centre, you'll find a wide range of shops from boutiques to expert outdoor clothing stores. Classy cafes are around every corner, so there are plenty of opportunities to relax and soak up the atmosphere. Some of the Lake District's finest restaurants are found in and around Ambelside - such as the Glass House in the village centre, or the famed Drunken Duck Inn just a short drive away at Outgate.
Of course, it's a must to enjoy Lake Windermere during your stay. Just a short stroll outside Ambleside village centre is Waterhead Pier, where Windermere Lake Cruises depart regularly to ferry passengers the full length of the lake. The traditional 'steamers' are a wonderfully romantic way to explore, with no need to use a car, and stopping off at Bowness or Lakeside.
For a taste of the wilder Lake District, take a short drive to Coniston or the breathtaking Langdale Valley - both within easy reach. Or, head up onto Kirkstone Pass - a high and dramatic road that winds its way between Windermere and Ullswater.
