Grasmere

Pass through Ambleside, along the peaceful shores of Rydal Water and you’ll find yourself in the inspiring surroundings that moved William Wordsworth to create his most renowned poetry.

Right at the heart of our Lake District National Park, Grasmere buzzes in an entirely different way to Bowness and Ambleside. It’s a friendly Lakeland village, full of character but with an air of history that will leave you spellbound. The spectacular setting has drawn poets, artists and painters for centuries.

William Wordsworth lived here, in Dove Cottage, from 1799 -1808, creating his most renowned work as a resident of the village. Visitors come from all over the world to set foot in his home, and the Wordsworth grave is one of the most treasured literary shrines in the world.

The work of the finest local artists and painters is on your doorstep, in several galleries and exhibitions. The Heaton Cooper Studio is the widest known, showing the renowned watercolours of Alfred Heaton Cooper and his son, William.

You can wile away endless hours here in the village square, on the riverside or exploring gentle strolls around the lake. If you’re ready to explore further, you’ll find the highlights of the Lake District within easy reach.

For exploring

The village is at the very centre of the Lake District, making it an ideal starting point for touring and exploring. Serenity is all around, with Grasmere Lake and peaceful Rydal Water nearby. And if you’re looking for a challenge, you’ve only a short drive to the foot of Helvellyn.

For walking

There are some lovely, easy walks surrounding Grasmere and Rydal Water, with no travel necessary. A manageable climb takes you up to and around Easedale Tarn, situated in the fells above the village. Serious walkers might take on the summit of Fairfield, Silver How, Helm Crag and Loughrigg; all within easy reach. A popular starting point for an ascent of Helvellyn is only a short drive up the road to Thirlmere.

For food & drink

Stocking up the kitchen is easy, with a small supermarket for everyday essentials and plenty of specialist shops to liven up your packed lunch. Restaurants are wonderfully varied and to an exceptionally high standard; everything from gastropubs (in the centre and in rural settings) to vegetarian restaurants. Grasmere is even home to two double-AA-rosetted restaurants; the Prelude Restaurant in the centre of the village (at the Wordsworth Hotel) and the riverside Conservatory Restaurant at the Rothay Garden Hotel.
