lakeside

At the Lake Windermere’s southern tip, nestled in the scenic Leven Valley, the sleepy hamlet of Lakeside is one of the most peaceful locations you could choose without straying from Windermere itself. There’s nothing quite like waking up and with the lake aspect so close by, then watching the skies and scenery brighten and soften through the day.

With the freedom to take your break at your own pace, you’ll wile away lazy days of lakeshore picnics and lake cruises. You can explore as far as Bowness and Ambleside without even needing a car; just take a ‘steamer’ from Lakeside pier. Of course, you have the Lake District’s wealth of attractions, excellent hikes and friendly communities within easy reach. You can even enjoy a trip to the coast, with Arnside and Morecambe Bay only about 50 picturesque minutes south.

Lakeside has two major attractions of its own. Lakes Aquarium offers hours of family entertainment; a unique collection of freshwater life from the area. It’s based at the starting point of the Lakeside Haverthwaite Railway, which has been running since 1872.

Explore hiking trails and unique attractions nearby, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet with no limits on your time.

For exploring

You’re brilliantly placed to explore a surprising array of scenery. Take a drive along the lake, for a picnic at Fell Foot Park and on to Bowness and Ambleside; both have a wealth of attractions and walks nearby. These villages are also reachable without a car, just take a ‘steamer’ from Lakeside pier. Head south and you’ll reach the serene Lancashire coast, to explore Arnside and Morecambe Bay.

For walking

Several well-marked strolls begin only minutes from your door such as the route to High Dam, a small but wonderfully picturesque tarn (out of the high season, you may well have the place to yourself). There are many ways to include the steamers

in your route, with drop-offs and pick-ups at Bowness and Ambleside.

For food & drink

The Lakeside Hotel and the Swan Hotel both offer delicious long lunches and top-notch evening meals. The Swan is a popular place for locals and boaters to moor up and stop for a pint. Nearby Bowness offers an endless choice of cafés, restaurants and bars, as well as being the ideal place to stock up the fridge from the specialist shops and supermarkets.
