Langdale

As you leave the major tourist route to approach Langdale Valley, the views will stop you in your tracks and you’ll realise why this is one of the Lake District’s most photographed areas. Blissfully quiet, scarcely inhabited, bar the scattered communities of Chapel Stile and Elterwater, and dominated by the majestic presence of the famous Langdale Pikes.

It’s hardly any distance to Ambleside, Coniston and other fine areas of the Lakes, but you could easily spend your entire holiday here in the valley, switched off from the world with the exception of a few drinks in one of the friendly local pubs. The river Rothay runs through Langdale Valley from Grasmere and Rydal Water, waterfalls tricking down from the surrounding fells to join it as it flows into the pretty little tarn of Elterwater. The river creates a wonderful atmosphere for lazy picnics and easy walks, of which there are plenty.

We’re certain you’ll fall in love with this spectacular yet tranquil valley. But you really have to see it for yourself.

For exploring

Langdale Valley may feel wonderfully remote, but if you’d like to explore further afield you can do so easily. You’re well placed for Coniston, Hawkshead, Grasmere, Ambleside and Windermere.

For walking

This is an obvious choice for keen hikers and climbers, with accessible summits and exciting crags. From the valley you can hike to England’s highest tarn, or take on spectacular Jack’s Rake ridge as you tick-off the famous three; Harrison Stickle, Pike of Stickle and Loft Crag. The neighbouring Wasdale and Borrowdale Valleys bring excitement of their own, as traditional starting points for an ascent of Scafell Pike.

For food & drink

With Ambleside so close by, you’re well served for stocking up on groceries or exploring a wider choice of eateries. In the heart of the valley, the New Dungeon Ghyll has a top-class restaurant, bookable in advance by non-residents, and a more casual Walkers’ Bar. Nearby Stickelbarn is also a haven for hikers and climbers, offering hearty portions in a large beer garden that really soaks up the scenery. The Langdale Hotel & Spa hosts two excellent restaurants, The Terrace and Purdey’s.
