Windermere

As you drive along the glorious A591 from Kendal, Lake Windermere will come into view on the final stretch. You’ll arrive in Windermere village, set back from the lake (only a mile or two from Bowness Bay) and forming a friendly little community that’s perfectly placed for access to all the major highlights of the Lake District. If you’re travelling by train, Windermere village is the handiest Lakes destination, with a connection from Oxenholme straight to the village.

In the centre, you’ll find everything you need from classy cafés to fresh groceries, as well as gift shops galore. There’s definitely an air of sophistication to this Lakeland community and its neighbouring village of Bowness, but it’s also a friendly place to get to know, and to return to as you explore the wider reaches of the Lake District.

For exploring

Windermere is not actually on the lake shores as the name might suggest, but it’s only a mile or two up the road from the lake and lively Bowness Bay. What’s more, the village is just off the main route through the Lakes, making it simple and easy to navigate your way around must-see places such as Ambleside, Coniston, Langdale and more.

For walking

For something special, set off from the village and climb to the spectacular viewpoint at Orrest Head. This was the first Lakeland ‘summit’ to be visited by Alfred Wainwright. You’ll find that Windermere village is a great base for a hiking holiday; ample facilities on your doorstep and the Lakeland Fells within easy reach. You’re also only a few miles from Staveley, starting point for spectacular walking and mountain biking in the Kentmere Valley.

For food & drink

From the famed Jerichos Restaurant to first-class fish & chips, casual breakfast cafés to cosy traditional pubs, you’ll find plenty of choice for eating and drinking on your doorstep. The First Floor café at Lakeland Ltd HQ is well worth a visit, if you can tear yourself away from the cookery fan’s paradise on the bottom floor! Booths supermarket is a distinguished place to stock up the kitchen, and you’ll find fresh produce available in the village centre.
