Ambleside is one of those villages that you just fall in love with and one that hasn’t yet been taken over by the retail giants and still has a number of independent retailers which just adds to the charm of this already stunning location.

Gather your group for a relaxing day by the Lake Windermere; paddle in the sunshine amidst the stunning scenery, picnic in the park by the lakeshore in the country, take a steamer from Bowness or Newby Bridge, or put in just a little more effort by hiring some rowing boats or even kayaks, and take your party on a Swallows-and-Amazon’s-style adventure.

Perhaps you could finish your day in the local jazz bar with a few glasses of wine, or sit out in one of the beer gardens down at the lake, we can recommend the Wateredge for this, surely one of the finest locations anywhere to sip on your favourite tipple.

Raising the energy level, the fell-walking available here is truly spectacular. There is no need to take your car, either, unless you want to. Some of the major Lakeland walking trails are easily accessible, and you can spend an amazingly beautiful day on the renowned high-level circuit of the Fairfield Horseshoe, right from your doorstep.

There are some great lower-level walks, too. You can take the historic Coffin-Trail to Grasmere, wander over Loughrigg and marvel at the views over Windermere, Grasmere, and Rydal lakes, ascend the steep-sided Wansfell, and reap the rewards as you look down over Ambleside, the lake, and the far hills and valleys beyond.

Why not take your party into Skelghyll Woods, with their deer, badgers, foxes, and occasional red squirrels, and further on to the peaceful Troutbeck valley, stopping off at The Mortal Man Inn for a beer and a bar meal on the picnic benches outside in summer, or a cosy warm-up inside on those frosty winter days with the roaring open fire.

Amongst the many attractions in and around Ambleside are the little Bridge House in the village itself, the local climbling-wall, the picturesque waterfalls at nearby Stock Ghyll, the vistor centre at Brockhole, and the associated Tree Top Treks adventure, the recreation gardens at White Platts near the town centre, offering tennis, bowls, or mini-golf, Dove Cottage at Grasmere, Wordsworth’s famous home, the Beatrix Potter Exhibition at Bowness, and her house at Sawrey.
