Ambleside Cottages | Sleeps 8-9

Self catering holiday cottages in Ambleside, sleeping 8 to 9 people

Are you planning a visit to the Lake District with a party of between 8 and 9 people? We recommend a stay at one of our superb larger properties in Ambleside. This is a perfect location for a family expedition or a break with a group of friends. Once you arrive you can leave your car at your accommodation, throw off the trappings of city life, and simply walk straight out onto the scenic fells. Don’t worry if not everyone in your party is ready to tackle the highest peaks or longest trails; you can all enjoy a ramble by the side of the pretty River Rothay and down to the park by Lake Windermere, wander through the green leaves, woodland flowers, and bird-calls in Skelghyll Woods, and perhaps spot one of the resident population of red squirrels, one of Britain’s most endangered species.

The more ubiquitous deer can often be seen, along with badgers and foxes, at dawn and dusk.

With a little more effort you can make your way up nearby Wansfell, with its stunning views down the longest lake in England. This is steep ascent, but relatively short, and infinitely rewarding. From the top, you can always push on to the Troutbeck valley, and partake in the hospitality and excellent food and ales at The Mortal Man Inn, which has a restful beer garden with beautiful views, a great place to while away a summer’s day and if you don’t fancy the hike back over Wansfell you can always grab a taxi back. We have a la ran

Loughrigg Fell is another great choice for a lower level walk, and from here you can get to Loughrigg Terrace, a lovely vantage point overlooking Grasmere Lake and village. Stretching the legs even more is the day hike of the Fairfield Horseshoe. The views are worth every step of this renowned hill-top circuit so named for its mimicking shape of an actual horseshoe.

Whether you are here for outdoor adventure or rural relaxation, Ambleside is the place for your party; picnic by Lake Windermere, paddle in the sunshine in some of the finest scenery in the country, take a steamer from Waterhead or hire a rowing boat and go adventuring amongst the little islands and coves.

There is also the option for more challenging activities like canoeing on some of the many rivers that feed Lake Windermere, or if you are feeling really ambitious tackle some of the mountain climbing in the Lakes and with so numerous companies offering this, you can be sure to do it safely under the guide of a trained professional.

Ambleside is a real hub of the Lake District. It is well-appointed for exploring further afield, and the bustling village itself has some of the best outdoor equipment stores in the country, along with independent shops, enticing cafes, cosy pubs such as the Unicorn Inn, a real example of a traditional pub, and well thought of restaurants like the Matthews Bistro and the Log House.

Amongst the top attractions for larger families and groups in the Ambleside area are the Brockhole vistor centre, an adventure for children at Tree Top Treks, an afternoon at recreation gardens at White Platts in Ambleside, where you can play tennis, bowls, or mini-golf, a visit to the Beatrix Potter Exhibition at Bowness, or her house at Sawrey, the climbing wall in the town itself, and a visit to Dove Cottage, Wordsworth’s home in nearby Grasmere is a great afternoon for the culture vultures among us.
