Self Catering Holiday Cottages in Ambleside

Welcome to Ambleside

Home to the Romans from 300 – 400 AD and the Vikings in 1000 AD, Ambleside is said to take its name from ‘Hamel’, a Viking who once owned the land, and the Norse word ‘Saetre’, which means farm or pasture. The Vikings are also said to have introduced the famous Herdwick sheep to Ambleside during their time in the area.

In 1650, the area was granted a market charter, by King James II and it soon became a commercial centre for agriculture and wool. It was also granted a second charter during King James’ reign, which allowed it to collect tolls. One of the Lake District’s most famous descendants, William Wordsworth, worked in Ambleside as a stamp distributor from 1813 to 1842; when he became the Poet Laureate and resigned his stamp duties. Lakelovers’ spectacular portfolio of quality Ambleside holiday cottages is the perfect place to start your journey into this magical town in the Lake District.
