Winter Walk, 6.79 miles \u2013 Keswick\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Little Man and Glendeterra Beck, Keswick\u00a0\u2013 this\u00a0wonderful, winter\u2019s day walk is from George Fisher, the impressive\u00a0outdoor retailer based in central Keswick. We admit that we\u2019ve picked this walk partly based on the delicious Christmas Cake, specialist coffee and spectacular views that await return walkers at the store\u2019s top floor Abraham\u2019s Caf\u00e9! Alas, for hill baggers you can collect these too: Latrigg, Lonscale Fell, Sale How, Little Man and Skiddaw summit, for those who fancy it.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re staying in Keswick over the winter holidays, the chances are you\u2019re in the market for a quiet one. You\u2019re coming to the Lakes to\u00a0escape bustle and seek solitude and a well-earned rest this\u00a0festive period. Well, this is exactly what you get with this route. It is a good length with lots of peaks so you can get stuck into a proper day out in the fells, weather allowing.\u00a0And along the stretch of the Cumbria Way, running between Skiddaw and Blencathra, the feeling that you are\u00a0a million miles away from everyone could be the perfect\u00a0festive tonic! Here, you\u2019ve found one of the lesser trodden spots in the Lakes and with winter comes a\u00a0palpable stillness that soothes mind and lets the body be reinvigorated.<\/p>\n

A Faery Realm Row, 1 hour \u2013 Windermere\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Lake District is often described as a miniature Alpine landscape. Well, Faeryland Tea & Coffee Garden and Rowing Boat Hire on Grasmere really is a world in miniature. And on a bright winter\u2019s day, when Grasmere\u2019s water is still, the reflections here are magical. The light in winter is enchanting and here in this tiny faery-sized cove, the world feels like it stops. Hire a pretty, painted row boat for two or four and allow yourself to be suspended in nature. And in the words of Faeryland:<\/p>\n

Family Cycle, 4 miles \u2013 Grasmere\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Choose the gentle 8 mile (there and back) Windermere West Shore Cycle Route\u00a0and enjoy the traffic-free side of Lake Windermere.<\/p>\n

Take the ferry from Bowness-on-Windermere over to Far Sawrey. From here, you and the family, kitted up for a day outdoors, immediately join the blue cycleway signs and can take in the beautiful views of Lake Windermere through the trees from the elevated position of your bikes. You\u2019ll pass Claife Viewing Station, which has a caf\u00e9 and toilets\u00a0if you\u2019re already in need of a stop.<\/p>\n

Pleasure cruisers and sailboats bob on the lake and you\u2019ll pass walkers enjoying his car-free side of Windermere. Look out for the impressive Balla Wray at High Wray \u2013 one of Lakelovers latest Lake Windermere holiday cottages.<\/p>\n

Knowing that after only 4 miles on this relatively gentle route, along a wide wooded trail path, you can stop at Wray Castle\u2019s caf\u00e9 for a hot drink and sweet treat, makes this ride all the more pleasurable.\u00a0Plus, if the weather has taken a change for the worst, jump aboard the bike boat from Wray Jetty to Brockhole where you can catch the 800 bike bus back to Windermere. More confident riders can continue from Wray Castle to Ambleside.<\/p>\n
