Train rides through the Lake District are glorious.<\/h2>\n<p>And, while there are only a few train services running throughout the Lake District, they are the most picturesque!<\/p>\n<p>So for those of you who love trains \u2013 whether steam or electric \u2013 here is the low down on the lines and attractions.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Lakes Line <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Running from Oxenholme to Windermere is the Lakes Line.<\/p>\n<p>It calls in at Oxenholme, Kendal, Burneside, Staveley and Windermere.<\/p>\n<p>The whole section of this track weaves through rural countryside and you\u2019ll see spectacular views along the way. From dramatic hilly pastures, deciduous woods to cascading rivers and streams.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1218920 aligncenter b-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/10\/orrest-head-train-400x268.jpg\" alt=\"Lake District holiday cottages\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/10\/orrest-head-train-400x268.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While the line does not carve through the mountains, it runs close to fantastic fells, such as Orrest Head and Helsfell Nab.<\/p>\n<p>The Lakes Line links the destinations on its route with direct services on the West Coast Mainline.<\/p>\n<h2><em><strong>Trains And Walks<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Indeed, this is the perfect line to catch a train to combine a lovely train ride with a walk.<\/p>\n<p>A series of walks have been written by the late Mary Walsh. (An award-winning writer of walking books and a travel writer, who died in January).<\/p>\n<p>All the walks in this series\u00a0start from the railway stations at Oxenholme, Kendal, Burneside, Staveley, and Windermere.<\/p>\n<p>Windermere station, at the end of the Lakes line, \u00a0is as close as you can get to the central Lakes by train.<\/p>\n<p>This line is a great way to explore the area of Cumbria from Windermere to Kendal, without having to start-up your car\u2019s engine.<\/p>\n<p>Also, there are many bus services connecting trains at Windermere station for onward travel within the Lake District.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Cumbrian Coastal Line <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Cumbrian coastal weaves around the majority of the Cumbrian coastline. This makes it a spectacularly scenic route.<\/p>\n<p>It follows the coast from Lancaster in the south (north Lancashire) to Carlisle (the northern reaches of Cumbria).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1218918 aligncenter b-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/10\/grange-over-sands-trains-400x268.jpg\" alt=\"Lake District holiday cottages\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/10\/grange-over-sands-trains-400x268.jpg\" \/>It is definitely worth stopping off along the way at some of the little Cumbrian villages and towns. This includes the Victorian seaside town of Grange-over-Sands.<\/p>\n<p>Other lovely stops along the way, include: Cark; Dalton-in-Furness, Ravenglass, St Bees and Whitehaven.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these towns and villages have lots for tourists to do and see, such as Holker Hall.<\/p>\n<p>And, with the line running close to the\u00a0coast, there is the link with waters of the Solway and Morecambe Bay. Both are sites of special scientific interest (SSSI).<\/p>\n<p>It has an\u00a0historical offering too.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0line traces many thousands of years of history. It circles ancient\u00a0stone circles, historic ports,\u00a0Hadrian\u2019s Wall, and centres of mining and industry. Find out more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communityrailcumbria.co.uk\/lines\/cumbrian-coast-line\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>And, there are the popular tourist train attractions too:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Ravenglass and Eskdale <\/strong><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_1218919\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 410px;\">\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1218919 size-medium b-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/10\/Optimized-150819-Northern-Rock-ravenglass-400x268.jpg\" alt=\"dog-friendly Lake District holiday cottages\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1218919\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/10\/Optimized-150819-Northern-Rock-ravenglass-400x268.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1218919\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The smell and sound of a classic steam train \u2013 you can\u2019t beat it.<\/p>\n<p>And, with the Ravenglass and Esskdale Railway you get the nostalgia too.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s miniature train \u2013 affectionately known as La \u2018al Ratty.<\/p>\n<p>And, it journeys\u00a0a wonderful\u00a07-miles of the western Lake District, over fells to the Cumbrian coast.<\/p>\n<p>Ravenglass is the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park.<\/p>\n<p>And, from here, you can travel to seven different places en route to Dalegarth and Boot Station.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>An Historic Railway\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It was originally constructed to carry iron ore from Eskdale\u2019s mines to the coast.<\/p>\n<p>In the mid 1930s the Ravenglass-to-Eskdale line was the shortest passenger railway in the world. An, now it is a popular tourist attraction.<\/p>\n<p>The operation has been preserved thanks to the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway\u00a0preservation society. And, 8 diesel locomotives, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakesiderailway.co.uk\/7120-class-11-english-electric\/\">7120, Class 11 (English Electric)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There is a stock of carriages, which include the 5 (Royal Saloon)\u00a0 \u2013\u00a0built in 1898 at GER Stratford.<\/p>\n<p>So, there is heaps of great interest for train-lovers.<\/p>\n<p>And, how about becoming a train driver for the day and controlling your own locomotive?
