This bustling market town is crammed full of things to do, places to go and see, shops, cinemas, cafes and restaurants, all welcoming your visit and business, when things open up again.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2453\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2453\" class=\"wp-image-2453\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/02\/shutterstock_1894958620.jpg\" alt=\"Loughrigg Fell\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2453\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Loughrigg Fell<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Where to walk<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/ambleside-cottages.html\">Ambleside<\/a> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/category\/walking-holidays\/\">walker\u2019s paradise<\/a>! The central high fells are all around you&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Stock Ghyll Force<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">A short walk from the village leads you to Stock Ghyll Force, a spectacular 70-foot waterfall, with easy walks all around and a carpet of daffodils in the spring.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In years gone by many watermills were driven by the sheer power of Stock Ghyll. There are many long walks from here and you can head up to the ancient packhorse bridge: High Sweden Bridge, which then takes you out onto the higher fells. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Loughrigg Fell<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">This lovely walk takes you up to a fabulous viewpoint right across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/rydal-cottages.html\">Rydal<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/grasmere-cottages.html\">Grasmere<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You\u2019ll walk around the lakeshore and explore Rydal cave on your way through. It\u2019s about 6 miles circular from the centre of Ambleside,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>check the route <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walklakes.co.uk\/walk_141.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Stagshaw Gardens, Jenkins Crag and Skelghyll Woods<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Just up the road from Waterhead, you\u2019ll discover the National Trust owned Stagshaw Gardens, with a fine collection of rhododendrons and azaleas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Further on from here through the woods is Jenkins Crag, and Skelghyll Woods, where you can follow the fascinating \u2018Champion Tree trail\u2019, where you\u2019ll find Douglas Firs, Wellingtonia, along with the tallest tree in Cumbria \u2013 a Grand Fir.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2452\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2452\" class=\"wp-image-2452\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/02\/shutterstock_1115457953.jpg\" alt=\"Stock Ghyll Force\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stock Ghyll Force<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>What not to miss<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Windermere Lake Cruises<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Jump on a Windermere Lake Cruise, and you can head off around the Lake, alighting at Bowness, Wray Castle, or Lakeside (with a connection to Fell Foot Park), or Brockhole Visitor Centre.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or you might just want to stay on and enjoy the leisurely hour-long sail around the lake<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Zeffirelli\u2019s Cinema<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Zeffirelli\u2019s is a long-established part of the culture in Ambleside, and as well as the usual cinema programme, you can see art-films, mountain and outdoor films and they are a major part of the various Film and outdoor festivals.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They also have a rather good vegetarian restaurant where they have Jazz and musical nights too. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Bridge House<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Located in the centre of the village is one of the smallest houses in England, and probably the most photographed and instagrammable scenes in the Lake District. It sits over Stock Ghyll Beck and has 2 tiny rooms which apparently various families have lived in down the years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><i>Ambleside Climbing Wall<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Ambleside Climbing Wall is a great place for a rainy day, whether you\u2019re a complete beginner or experienced.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s a good caf\u00e9, and friendly staff to help you on your way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><i>Hayes Garden World<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Just off Lake Road, this is a great spot for a rainy-day visit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Lots of gardening know-how, along with plants and gifts for sale, and a tearoom and free parking. Photo credit: Windermere Lake Cruises<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Food and drink<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">You\u2019ll be spoilt for choice, from fine dining to cosy pubs, to friendly cafes. Lots of options for veggie &amp; vegan too so you can eat and drink your way around the town. For a small town, you\u2019ll find over 20 restaurants or pubs, at least 13 cafes or takeaways.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For fine dining, our 2 award-winning the <span class=\"s1\"><i>Old Stamp House <\/i><\/span>(Michelin Star) and <span class=\"s1\"><i>Lake Road Kitchen<\/i><\/span> are renowned for modern British cuisine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Lots of informal dining, try <\/span><i>Lucy\u2019s on a Plate<\/i><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><i>Zeffirelli\u2019s<\/i><span class=\"s2\"> and the <\/span><i>Rattle Ghyll Caf\u00e9<\/i><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If you fancy a pint in a traditional pub, we\u2019ve lots of cosy pubs all within 5 minutes of each other, with great beers and comfort food.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Choose from <span class=\"s1\"><i>The Priest Hole, the White Lion, Churchills,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Queens Hotel, The Lily, The Royal Oak<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Golden Rule, the Unicorn<\/i><\/span> and the <span class=\"s1\"><i>Ambleside Tavern<\/i><\/span>.
