{"id":2892,"date":"2021-06-28T16:11:32","date_gmt":"2021-06-28T15:11:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2892"},"modified":"2025-11-26T15:23:23","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T15:23:23","slug":"cumbria-wildlife-trust-and-30dayswild-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/cumbria-wildlife-trust-and-30dayswild-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Cumbria Wildlife Trust and #30DaysWild Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re supporting the #30DaysWild Campaign with Cumbria Wildlife Trust<\/p>\n<p>Our natural world is in trouble and wildlife is disappearing at an alarming rate and it\u2019s crucial that we all continue to make more space for nature, to give our struggling wildlife the chance to recover and to restore beautiful wild places. \u00a0Lakelovers are Corporate Members of Cumbria Wildlife Trust, and\u00a0 we caught up with Michelle Waller, from Cumbria Wildlife Trust, to tell us more about their campaign: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildlifetrusts.org\/stay-wild\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#30DaysWild.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Tell us about the work of Cumbria Wildlife Trust and why it\u2019s so important. <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We\u2019re the only voluntary organisation that\u2019s devoted to the conservation of the wildlife and wild places of Cumbria, by looking after nature reserves, which are refuges for threatened plants and animals, as well as being unspoilt places that you can visit. We also focus on projects to protect certain species and habitats, like bumblebees, hay meadows and peat bogs.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last year people have realised how important contact with nature and the natural environment is. The nature reserves we care for and the work we do over the whole of Cumbria gives people a place to \u2018take that breath\u2019 and enjoy natural surroundings.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What is 30 Days wild and what does it achieve? <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>#30DaysWild is our annual nature challenge \u2013 we\u2019re encouraging everyone to enjoy the benefits of daily contact with nature this June, by doing a \u2018<strong>random act of wildness\u2019 <\/strong>every day for 30 days: listen to bees buzzing, taking wildlife photographs, star-gazing or taking your coffee-break watching birds from your window. \u00a0It doesn\u2019t need to be complicated; you don\u2019t need to have any special knowledge and it needn\u2019t take long \u2013enjoy the time you take and just a few minutes a day is enough to benefit us and to notice what is out there!<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2990\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/06\/1431780982541-aira-force-red-squirrel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>#30DaysWild has been going since 2015 and since then we estimate that over 1 million people have taken part nationwide! Our research with the University of Derby on show that taking part in 30 Days Wild increases people\u2019s wellbeing and heightened sense of nature long after the challenge is over.\u00a0 It\u2019s free to take part and there are packs for businesses, schools, and care homes. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildlifetrusts.org\/stay-wild#sign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sign up here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>How can our guests best enjoy wildlife when they are in the Lakes on a visit?<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Early summer is a wonderful time to enjoy wildlife in Cumbria &#8211; walk in woods full of the sight and scent of bluebells and enjoy the hay meadows in bloom. We have 38 nature reserves for people to visit and lots of free guides to download showing great places to see wildlife all over Cumbria \u2013 from butterflies and red squirrels to sand dunes and birds of prey. There\u2019s also our series of Wildlife Walks, with walks off the beaten track, where you might spot all kinds of wildlife, from grey seals and buzzards. We\u2019re working to transform the hay meadows at our newest nature reserve Bowber Head Farm . Bogs are very efficient at keeping carbon locked away, so they are important in our fight against climate change.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Where\u2019s your favourite place for wildlife spotting in the county?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure I can pick a favourite and it\u2019s going to get me in so much trouble! I love walking in the woodlands at <strong>Barkbooth Lot Nature Reserve<\/strong>. It\u2019s great year-round, but the bluebells, primroses and orchids always remind me of my mum and make me smile.\u00a0 Just stopping for a moment to listen to the birds and the leaves in the breeze is relaxing and the dragonflies and butterflies are a joy to see.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3023\" style=\"width: 464px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3023\" class=\"wp-image-3023 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/06\/Bluebell-Barkbooth-Lot-Nature-Reserve-Lake-District-credit-Cumbria-Wildlife-Trust.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"454\" height=\"255\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3023\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barkbooth Nature Reserve c Cumbria Wildlife Trust<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A lot of people forget that Cumbria has a huge, beautiful, <strong>coast<\/strong> \u2013 we spend so long with our backs to the sea looking at the hills! Just turn around and you might see dolphins and basking sharks out to sea.\u00a0 <strong>South Walney Nature Reserve<\/strong> (just across the bridge from Barrow) is spectacular \u2013 especially when all the wading birds are staying-over. We also have a powered \u2018tramper\u2019 there which means people who need to use one can borrow this and get around the nature reserve.<\/p>\n<p>Another great spot is <strong>Eycott Hill<\/strong>, with fabulous views over Blencathra, where you feel like you\u2019re on top of the world without having to hike up a steep slope.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of places to tick off your #30DaysWild moments!<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What do you do to relax?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I love being in, on or next to water &#8211; rivers, lakes, and the sea. It\u2019s amazing how the sound of water can replace the \u2018noise\u2019 of everyday life in my head.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a river running through the middle of the town where I live and just a couple of minutes from my house.\u00a0 During lockdown I\u2019ve walked next to the river virtually every day \u2013 and enjoyed noticing the changes in the plants and the wildlife too. \u00a0It\u2019s great watching a busy dipper or graceful heron and occasionally see the otter gliding through the water or the iridescent flash of a kingfisher.<\/p>\n<p>Like many people \u2013 I got more into swimming outdoors last year.
