February half term in the Lake District is a wonderful time of year. In general, the Lakes are a lot quieter during winter months with fewer cars on the road and shorter queues to the main attractions. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The landscapes are stunning too, with a chance of snow on the fells and beautiful, frozen lakes and frosty mornings to enjoy. So whether you are looking to explore its rugged landscapes, take part in some family activities and events or simply looking to cosy up by the fire, the Lake District would be a great option.<\/p>\n

1. Beautiful Winter Weather<\/h2>\n

If you’re spending February half-term in the Lake District, get ready to marvel at the winter wonderland and enjoy waking up to perfectly still lakes, late sunrises and snow-capped fells.<\/p>\n

The crisp winter weather can be lovely and refreshing and shows a whole different side to this stunning landscape. A great place to see a winter sunrise is Latrigg Fell<\/strong> overlooking Keswick<\/strong> <\/a>and Derwentwater, there is\u00a0Castlerigg Stone Circle<\/strong> or enjoy the morning reflections on Coniston Water<\/strong><\/a>. Head up to one of the highest passes to watch either the sunrise or sunsets, Kirkstone Pass<\/strong> near Ambleside<\/a>. <\/strong>An easy stroll on to Scout Scar with far reaching views over The Lyth Valley<\/strong><\/a> is a firm favourite. There are too many to list!<\/p>\n

Bring your winter warmers, from insulated coats, gloves and scarfs, as well as a good set of walking boots or wellies because expect it to be muddy and cold on the tops of the national park. But it will be all worth it when you take in the early morning sunrise.<\/p>\n

2. Low-Level Walks<\/h2>\n

\"Slaters<\/p>\n

Make the most of the winter weather and take on some fantastic low-level walks, suitable for all the family. Tarn Hows<\/a> <\/strong>owned by the National Trust, would be a great place to visit in February half term in the Lake District – it’s wide paths make it accessible for those in wheelchairs, scooters, or prams.<\/p>\n

Another great choice would be the Coffin Route walk between Rydal <\/strong><\/a>and Grasmere<\/strong><\/a> where you can look out for wildlife along the way. If you’d like to explore somewhere a little different, why not try the walk from Little Langdale<\/strong> <\/a>to Cathedral Cave<\/a> <\/strong>and back again via the historic Slater’s Bridge<\/a><\/strong>, finishing off with a hot meal at the Three Shires Inn<\/a> <\/strong>to warm up!<\/p>\n

3. Family Activities for Rainy Days<\/h2>\n

Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway<\/p><\/div>\n

February half-term in the Lake District may see a few rainy days, but that shouldn’t put you off! There are loads of great indoor activities to keep the whole family entertained. Take a trip to Allan Bank<\/strong> in Grasmere<\/a> – where you can cosy up by the fire, read a book, play dress up, or watch for red squirrels in the gardens.<\/p>\n

Step back in time and take a ride on a steam train, with a number of great options across this stunning county, from the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway<\/a>, the line travels around 3 miles and takes you through the incredible views of the Leven Valley.<\/p>\n

Or visit the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway<\/a>, this line is one of the oldest surviving narrow gauge railways in the world. This journey is around 7 miles and gives you an option of open top carriages or covered, I think for this time of the year it will be very much covered but keep your eyes peeled for Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England.<\/p>\n

Brockhole<\/strong><\/a> and its tree top high wires adventure course also offers a range of activities over the February half term. For younger kids, they have the chance to meet Petter Rabbit<\/a> at the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction<\/a><\/strong> in Bowness-on-Windermere<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Or why not take a trip across Lake Windermere<\/a> on the Windermere Lake Cruises<\/a>, take in the fantastic scenery from the water, whether it be rain or shine. Make sure you bring your camera with you as your bound to come across some incredible images!<\/p>\n

4. Quieter Roads<\/h2>\n

February half-term in the Lake District is usually quieter than other school holidays, as many people prefer to travel in the warmer months. This means during the winter you can usually expect quieter roads, less traffic and shorter queues, leaving you with more time to enjoy your holiday! The only things you might experience on the roads are the local sheep enjoying their daily walk.<\/p>\n

Even with this, it might still be better to book events and attractions in advance, even in the quieter months just to be on the safe side.<\/p>\n
