{"id":6038,"date":"2021-04-30T10:09:45","date_gmt":"2021-04-30T09:09:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/?p=6038"},"modified":"2024-12-17T15:56:05","modified_gmt":"2024-12-17T15:56:05","slug":"kirkby-lonsdale-guide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/kirkby-lonsdale-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Kirkby Lonsdale &#8211; The Lake District Village Guide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong>The beautiful market town of Kirkby Lonsdale sits right on the border of Cumbria, Lancashire &amp; Yorkshire.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Set on the idyllic River Lune, among rolling hills, it is an elegant spot, full of cobbled streets, independent shops, great pubs, and cafes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The town centre on the ancient church, is full of interesting buildings and pretty cottages and is a delight at any time, but especially around Christmas.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Read on to find out more about Kirkby Lonsdale&#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Where to walk<\/h2>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/04\/Devils-Bridge-Kirkby-Lonsdale-Cumbria-1.jpg\" alt=\"Devil's Bridge, Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria.\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Devil&#8217;s Bridge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Head down to Devil\u2019s Bridge further down on the River Lune this very high ancient bridge with 3 arches, is a real landmark for the town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Here you\u2019ll find a legendary food van serving bacon butties and popular with motorcyclists, walkers and cyclists who congregate there after a trip around the area. There are riverside paths all along the Lune from here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Ingleton Waterfalls Trail<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Just 7 miles from Kirkby Lonsdale you\u2019ll find the 4 1\/2 mile Ingleton Waterfalls Trail that boasts some of the most spectacular waterfall and oak woodland scenery in the UK.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">With rare and interesting plants and wildlife its importance as a geological site, much of the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest by Natural England.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There are a number of steps, making this walk unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What not to miss<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6934\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakelovers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/04\/Ruskins-View-in-Kirkby-Lonsdale-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ruskin's View in Kirkby Lonsdale.\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Ruskin\u2019s View<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Ruskin\u2019s View is a place to sit and take in the panorama of the Lune Valley, with rolling meadows and lush green hills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Ruskin enjoyed the view so much he pronounced in 1875 that it was one of the loveliest views in England. You can easily wander through the churchyard to get there, or clamber from the River Lune up the 86 \u2018radical\u2019 steps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Street Market and Shop Independent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Kirkby Lonsdale street market takes place every Thursday on Market Square car park. There are lots of independent shops here, from artisan chocolate, to locally made shower and bath products, unusual gifts, cards, books and accessories, homeware, ornaments, children\u2019s toys and clothing, second-hand books and outdoor wear. You can spend a happy afternoon browsing from one shop to another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Salt Pie Lane<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Salt Pie Lane used to be called Cattle Market Yard as cattle used to be sold in the adjoining lane which is confusingly called Horse Market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">A lady living in the yard made hot salted mutton pies to sell to the traders. After eating said pies, they headed to the nearby \u2018Green Dragon\u2019 (now The Snooty Fox) to quench their thirst &#8211; the landlord of which just happened to be a relation!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>St. Mary\u2019s Church<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Also known as Kirkby Lonsdale Parish Church, St. Mary\u2019s was built somewhere between 1093 and 1130, although there was an old Saxon Church on the site before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The church displays a range of architectural styles, some dating from the early 12th century. In the churchyard are ten monuments that have been listed at Grade II, including a monument to the Burrow family, dating from the middle of the 18th century.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Food and Drink<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Kirkby Lonsdale is full of great pubs, restaurants and caf\u00e9s.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The <a href=\"https:\/\/klbrewery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery<\/span><\/strong><\/a> is popular throughout the pubs in the town, and has its own taproom bar, <a href=\"https:\/\/klbrewery.com\/the-royal-barn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The <span class=\"s1\">Royal Barn<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s a converted barn with cosy interior and you can taste some of the 20 cask\/keg or numerous bottled options. They also create their own gins and serve nibbles and snacks too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theorangetreehotel.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">The Orange Tree<\/span><\/strong><\/a> is a cosy pub with friendly atmosphere and great fish and chips. Another great pub is <a href=\"https:\/\/sun-inn.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Sun Inn<\/strong><\/a>, with open fires, beams, oak floors and a superb locally sourced menu, changing with the seasons.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If you want a central caf\u00e9, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/crossingpointcafe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Crossing Point Caf\u00e9 <\/span><\/strong><\/a>has some excellent lunch options all homemade with great cakes and they are an independent wine shop too.
