Well <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakesiderailway.co.uk\/\">Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway<\/a>, closed for Winter, tell us they\u2019re open especially for half-term (13th- 21st February 2016) so families can enjoy a nostalgic trip on a steam train in the beautiful south Windermere region. When you arrive or board at Haverthwaite station, don\u2019t forget to look out for the real-life signal box, water tower, bridge, coaling stage and goods dock \u2013 all fond features from the Thomas The Tank Engine fictional railway stories. Can you also spot scenes from the Harry Potter films?<\/p>\n<p>Visit the engine shed and pretend to be the \u2018Fat Controller\u2019, checking maintenance of the steam and diesel locomotives! Watch the engines roll by from the raised picnic area and kids can play on the fantastic woodland playground perfect for all ages. The locally brewed, from Ulverston Brewing Company, \u2018Fairburn Ale\u2019 is also sure to keep Dads happy too in the \u2018Station Restaurant\u2019. Luckily for holidaymakers it is one of the easiest to get too and has a very family-friendly \u00bd mile walk up to it from the lakeshore car park. During busy holidays, like half-term, it can be a good idea to leave the car behind and jump on one of the five steamers cruising Ullswater, rather than battle for a parking space in this extremely popular Lake District walk. After a walk up to the falls and around the surrounding Victorian \u2018pleasure garden estate\u2019, looking out for the \u2018wishing tree\u2019, you can sail away the rest of the day with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ullswater-steamers.co.uk\/\">Ullswater Steamers<\/a><\/strong> from the new Aira Point jetty. Oh, and don\u2019t\u00a0forget to take your camera and look out for red squirrels following \u2018Cyril\u2019s Squirrel ramble\u2019, where you follow the map (from the Aira Force National Trust Shop) and Cyril Squirrel\u2019s clues to unlock the password!<\/p>\n<p>Ullswater, \u2018Queen of the English Lakes\u2019 is said to be the \u2018most beautiful\u2019 in the National Park. It\u2019s definitely worth seeing her in all her glories from a cruise where parents, grandparents and kids alike can you can all enjoy the views and wildlife. \u00a0Holidays with children are\u00a0ideal in the Lake District with so many all-year-round activities to keep little ones occupied!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4 \u00a0Enjoy a \u2018Road Chip\u2019, Alvin and the Chipmunks<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Whilst you don\u2019t come to the magical Lake District especially to watch a film, there\u2019s no denying that sometimes you just want to make the kids happy. And what more of a treat, for grown-ups too, than to head to local <strong>Ambleside<\/strong> cinema <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeffirellis.com\">Zeffirellis<\/a> (included in the Guardian top 10 best independent cinemas 2010) where this half-term you could catch the latest \u2018Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip\u2019 or Jack Black\u2019s somewhat scary and magical adventure \u2018Goosebumps\u2019, described as \u2018a frightfully fun flick for families\u2019. \u2018Goosebumps\u2019 has gone straight to DVD so you could buy it in advance and enjoy from your cosy home-from-home holiday cottage. It\u2019s National Storytelling Week over\u00a0January 30th to Saturday February 6th\u00a02016 so\u00a0try to catch storyteller laureate Taffy Thomas if you can. His 2016 tour includes a couple of visits\u00a0to\u00a0South Lakeland Storytelling Club.<\/p>\n<p>Head to Brockhole Visitor Centre on 19<sup>th<\/sup> February. Enjoy the huge outdoor playground (5-14 years olds) and under 7\u2019s area where you\u2019ll find adventure unlike most play parks, including rope walks, zip wires and scramble nets or head into the Lake District tree canopy in the unique \u2018Treetop Nets and Trek\u2019, for 3 year old plus, for even more adventure.
