The unspoiled, historical gem that is the village of Cartmel, described by Radio 2’s Chris Evans as a ‘thimble full of diamonds’. This medieval village is a perfect base for your Lake District holiday. Situated on the fringe of the Lake District National Park towards the south end of Lake Windermere. This pretty village offers picturesque views, traditional pubs and a Michelin Star restaurant; Cartmel has it all.

The Pig & Whistle has an ever changing menu based on the seasonality of the products. Whilst the 450 year old Cavendish Arms provides exceptional British food using the finest local produce. For a true, fine dining experience, the Michelin Star restaurant, L’Enclume oozes sophistication. It is a must if you want a memorable experience.

There are many activities in which you can explore the quaint village. You can unwind and relax whilst being taken by the horse drawn carriage around the village led by the magnificent Friesian Horses. Or if you have an energy boost you can explore Cartmel Racecourse.

One of the most interesting attractions in Cartmel is The Priory. Established in 1190, The Priory has become one of the Lake Districts top attractions with a lot of the original features still in place. From exquisite stained glass windows to 15th Century choir stalls, it is a building of beauty. The guided tours will provide much information about the history.

To explore more of the village’s history, Holker Hall and Gardens is must. Located in Cark-in-Cartmel and home to Lord and Lady Cavendish, this stately home with award winning gardens embraces the traditional feel with the stables now been converted into a wonderful café. You can also explore the Estate on Segway’s, a fun activity and a surreal experience if you have never done this before, we would recommend this.

Cartmel Racecourse provides much entertainment throughout the year. From Spring and summer Bank Holiday racing days to the Cartmel Show. Both can guarantee a day of fun and thorough enjoyment and maybe a little flutter if you fancy your chances.

Also from the racecourse you can take many walks with one being up Speel Bank through glorious woodland. Cartmel is a great base for many walks in which you can explore the South Lakes.

And last, but certainly not least, the award winning and delicious Cartmel Village Sticky Toffee Pudding. Still 100% percent homemade and still sold in Cartmel Village Shop; this dessert has received fantastic reviews from the likes of Nigella Lawson and Jean-Christophe Novelli. As the Sticky Toffee Pudding has proved ever so popular they have now expanded their range to Sticky Banana Pudding, Sticky Chocolate Sauce and so much more.
