Cartmel Dog Friendly Cottages

Pet Friendly Self Catering Holiday Cottages in Cartmel

A self-catering holiday in the vast Lake District landscape is the ideal way to get away and include your beloved dog or dogs. The historical South Lake’s village of Cartmel and the surrounding pastoral countryside is steeped in history but with many modern surprises, plus is a stone’s throw from the Coniston fells, Grizedale Forest, Lake Windermere and Grange-over-sands.

Local attractions – Michelin star restaurant L’Enclume, Skydive Northwest, Unsworth’s Yard (artisan retail hub) and Lakeland Segway tour – are all enough to make this a very exciting place to stay, along with regional favourites like Holker Hall, Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, Lakeland Motor Museum and Sizergh Castle.

Cartmel Dog Friendly Cottages

Lakelovers have some special pet-friendly cottages in Cartmel, the oldest village in the Lake District. You can experience the historical beauty of this village whilst staying in a sympathetic farmhouse conversion, nestled in an awe-inspiring location. One looking down onto this idyllic valley, which is one of England’s most outstanding areas of natural beauty.

Our Cartmel Gold Award Green Tourism properties are fitted out with electric car charging point, biomass boiler and wind turbine. They are also very luxurious with 4 seater hot tub and indoor ‘endless’ swimming pool for when worn out pups have gone to bed!

You’ll find spacious and private Lakeland houses, set aside with private grounds and walks from your doorstep, ideal for families and large group get-togethers. For a romantic break, our cosy sleeps 2 studios are ideal. Our village cottages put you within the buzz of a welcoming Cumbrian community with superb pubs within walking distance.

Head out into the lush Cartmel countryside straight from your holiday cottage. Enjoy the splendour of the white Damson blossom in Summer that this area is famous for and the spectacular views over the Cartmel Peninsula.

From Cartmel, head for a circular 6.5 mile walk from the Racecourse to Beck Side, Speel Bank (keeping away from the nearby deer farm). Take in splendid views of the Leven Estuary, Coniston Fells and Ulverston’s Hoad tower monument and along the Cistercian Way back into Cartmel.

A visit to Cartmel’s famous medieval Priory is a must and of course perhaps there will be some crumbs for your furry four-legged companion from the village’s world-famous Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding, sold in Harvey Nicols and Fortnum & Mason no less.

The tidal sands and mudflats of the ‘Cross Bay’ guided walks, between Morcambe Bay and Grange, have no dog restrictions and is an exciting and most unusual walk, for dogs and their owners alike. This crossing must be carried out as a guided walk only where you can enjoy the buzz as your group make this exciting voyage.

Our pet friendly cottages in Cartmel come with large private gardens or walks straight from your doorstep, which make for a relaxing holiday with pets. Many of our cottages have wood burners or open fires. They always go down very well with a tired pooch after a day on the fells.

Need a well-deserved pint and hearty meal after a race around the fell tops? What better than a traditional country pub of which there are many in and around our Cartmel. Plenty welcome dogs too – The Pig & Whistle and The Royal Oak Inn included. We recommend trying the famous local Higginson’s meat served at the stylish 450-year-old Cavendish Arms, which is also dog-friendly.

Nearby Kendal is also a pet-friendly town, so no need to leave pooch behind when you need to re-stock the fridge. Just don’t forget to pop into Booths supermarket for some doggy treats. Also in Kendal, The Brewery Arts Centre has lots of outdoor space and seating. Other dog-friendly places in Kendal which serve a delicious lunch include The Riverside Hotel, which welcome dogs into the upmarket Tannery Bar & Bistro. For a real ale pub, look out for the wonderfully adorned The Castle Inn. It serves excellent food as well as a superb choice of real ales, including the delicious Loweswater Gold.

A 20 minute drive will take you to Lakeside, at the Southern shore of the UK’s largest and most impressive lake, Windermere. Here you, and your furry entourage, can hop on all-year-round dog friendly Windermere Lakes Cruises, Cumbria’s most popular attraction. Doggy bowls are on board and the cruise takes you to Ambleside where you can visit Paws by the Lake, a shopping mecca for dogs. The cruises are a great way to get out and explore more of the Lake District. Some of our favourite walks include Orrest Head in Windermere, a lakeshore walk from Wray Castle to Ferry House and the amble from Bowness pier to Potter country of Claife Heights.

A Pet Friendly Holiday in Cartmel

For such a quiet part of the Lake District, there’s lots going on throughout the year. It keeps visitors returning time and again to this peaceful valley. One of the most popular pulls is the famous Cartmel Racecourse, where dogs on leads are welcome. Plus they have busy annual fixtures including dog agility events.

In September one of the UK’s largest country shows – the Westmorland Show – takes place in Kendal. There’s plenty to do, including 400 trade stands, rural, artisanal and craft demonstrations, live music and kids activities. There is also the largest food hall in the North West and a jam packed schedule of events. this includes wrestling, livestock show and show jumping. And for dog lovers, the fun Terrier Racing is not to be missed and your speedy terrier can even take part, which is lots of fun.
