Looking for a short break in Cartmel then look no further than the historic, charming and enigmatic village of Cartmel. You can stay on Howbarrow Farm in properties such as Howbarrow Loft very close to the village or stay only a few miles away closer to The Lakes in the Abbots Mews Cottages renovated in late 2014. These lovely Mews properties and Cottages are only a short drive to Grizedale forrest for those adventurous folk who would like to experience the Go Ape™ course or have a Segway tour! Or even just go on one of their many forest walks.

Back in Cartmel the foodies amongst us are completely spoilt for choice with a selection of restaurants, pubs and eateries such as the Michelin accredited L’enclume owned by celebrity chef Simon Rogan. If you are looking for something more informal, take a stroll around the village square and try The Royal Oak, who also sometimes features good music from local bands.

Remember you are in one of our self-catering cottages and take advantage of the local shops to cook up your own culinary delights! Cartmel Village Shop is the home to the original Cartmel sticky toffee pudding, however remember to give your whole palate a treat and visit Cartmel cheese for a savoury treat. If you wish to go a little further, take an adventure to Grange-over-Sands for an ice cream and walk down the front along Morecambe Bay, followed by nipping into Higginsons Butchers for their award winning Pie or Sausages.

When you started your break with some of the fantastic food on offer in the local area, treat yourself to some pampering at Harmony Health and Beauty in the village or try some more strenuous activities with outdoor pursuits at Bigland Hall Estate. Within the village, the National Trust sometimes opens the historic gatehouse building for visitors to see or amble around the streets taking in the beautiful buildings.

If you are lucky enough to be there during one or more of the race days then make sure you visit Cartmel Race course for a day of spirit, your locally produced picnic and steeplechase. Top of this local day of tradition with a visit to Cartmel’s ancient Priory.
