Coastal Cottage Locations

Strewn up and down the west coast of Cumbria you will find some of the country’s finest beaches and coastal areas. Here, simple pleasures such as exploring rock pools with the children or taking the family dog for an early morning splash in the Irish Sea, perch side by side with more high octane activities such as wind surfing or paddle boarding. From the Solway Firth in the north, where you can see wild salt marshes, to Morecambe Bay in the south with its beautiful sands, self-catering near the Cumbrian coast has something for everyone.

Millom, around a 30 minute drive from Lakeside, is the home to the award-winning Haverigg Beach, located on the Duddon Estuary. The beach is famous for its wild, rustic grasses that cover the dunes which boarder the white sands and is the perfect location for kite flying, building sand castles or for taking a relaxing walk.

If equestrian pursuits are of interest, then Millom offers a unique and exciting opportunity. The stables at Cumbrian Heavy Horses are home to some spectacular Clydesdale, Shire and Ardennes breeds and visitors can choose from several different treks, including beach rides, where a canter along the sands and through the waves will make for an unforgettable experience.

In contrast, the mudflats and saltmarshes that can be found at the Solway Firth are teaming with thousands of species of birds and so serves as a mecca for those with a love of our feathered friends – eyes peeled for bar-tailed godwits and oystercatchers. The Solway Firth is in the far north of the Lake District and so those wanting to visit may look for a property in Keswick as an easy base.

Ravenglass has another of the Lake District’s best beaches and is situated to the west of Coniston. This picturesque stretch of Cumbrian coastline has fishermen’s cottages dotted along the seafront and the beach itself is at its most enchanting when the sun is setting and its reflection sets the sea below ablaze with colour.

You can, of course, combine your love of the coast with your love of the Cumbrian countryside by planning a walk that will allow you to take in both. One such walk can be found at Ravenglass and en route you can see the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway along with a Roman bath house.

Should you prefer, you can swap your walking boots for a seat on the steam train that shuttles along the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway periodically. This miniature steamer pulls open top carriages along a seven mile route up to Boot, at the foot of England’s highest peak, Scafell Pike.

Research has pinpointed several benefits from swimming in cold sea water and these include a stronger immune system and better blood circulation. Not only that but those taking the plunge also experience an immediate feeling of wellbeing as the body releases endorphins that are exhilarating. Plus, whilst in the water you burn more calories as the body fights to stay warm.
