A very comfortable cottage, extremely clean and a great kitchen for those whom enjoy cooking. Loved the Aga and the warmth it brought on the odd chilly morning. Great access to Lake District walks and Keswick. I would certainly stay here again!

Despite indifferent weather, we had a really enjoyable break, thanks to the quality of the accommodation. The cottage itself is in a secluded forested setting, and the interior has every comfort. It was noticeable that the property had not only been refurbished, but done so tastefully and to a high standard. I would also like to thank Sykes for their timely and comprehensive guidance to the property, which seemed to anticipate our needs at every turn.

I would rent it again. Beautiful views and we loved the kitchen and sitting area. We had 3 generations of family together and the space worked well. The only thing I would say is the drive a is a a bit tricky. there is a community fridge down the road for milk and eggs which is very handy :)

The house was everything and more . It was spacious but so cosy with all the different areas to sit in on the various floor levels . The attraction of the property was so great that my sister currently living in the US wants to relocate to The Lakes in a similar property ! No suggestions to make as everything had already been thought of - thank you .

“Amazing holiday cottage very close to Keswick and Derwentwater, which have everything you could want on your doorstep.”

Spacious yet with lots of little nooks for cosy reading. Well equipped. Nice and warm yet cool also when the temp hit 28! Garden is tranquil with the sound of the rushing stream. Would definitely recommend / come back. Only suggestion for improvement would be a simple bbq in the garden (but accept that we had some exceptional weather and it may not typically get used much). We climbed Skiddaw behind the cottage (4th highest peak in the Lakes) and Catbells. Visited the Spa up the road at Underscar. Went paddleboarding from Kettlewell carpark most days. Saw an excellent play at theatre by the lake and took a motorboat around Derwentwater. Finally some excellent meals at the Pheasant Inn (Keswick). Extremely relaxing for all.

“The Millstream was perfect for us, a lovely property.”

Very clean and comfortable, with finishing touches in every room, making it homely. Being over three floors It was nice to have all of the space. We enjoyed the large kitchen, ideal for families, which was well equipped. Enclosed garden suited us as well as our small dog. Prosecco and biscuits on arrival were a special surprise, a big thank you. A 25 minute walk to nearest pub, the Pheasant, either down a quietish lane or fields, albeit dogs must be on leads. The Pheasant servers very nice pub grub, & at the next corner was Fitz park, which enabled you to walk directly to Keswick, ideal for four legged friends (off lead). With Skiddaw behind, and walks from Keswick, you were spoilt for choice. An extremely great holiday for location and superb cottage!

“We had a lovely family stay at the Mlllstream, it is a lovely location with some gorgeous views from the top floor lounge windows.”

Lovely and warm, even in the cold snap and changeable weather we experienced! Enjoyed cooking on the aga and using the large country kitchen for family meals. Lovely evening walks from the front door with some fantastic views over Derwent and even an osprey siting!

“Lovely clean and well equipped cottage in a beautiful setting.”

Comfortable beds, warm and plenty of hot water as well as a cosy space to relax after a long day in the hills. Initial problem with door lock was managed well by the property manager (after spare key held by Heart of Lakes was out of date) and did not impact on our stay. Would definitely return

“Fantastic property.”

The only problem we had was there was no key in the key safe when we arrived after a 7 hour journey. However, we rang heart of the lakes and they contacted the relevant people who got back to us within half an hour. Turned out the people who had just left, had left the key under a stone out side the front door! Resolved promptly but would of been better if we had known that in advance. A wonderful cottage, spotlessly clean, hope to return soon.

At other holiday lets, hand soap has been provided with the hand basins, together with the option of a starter pack for day1 (ordered in advance) such as tea, coffee, milk, bread etc An enjoyable short stay and would certainty consider this property again.

“Perfect home from home in a wonderful location.”

The house is lovely throughout and contains everything you need for a truly relaxing break. We enjoyed wonderful walks from the door to the top of Latrigg and Dodd then returned to Millstream for a well earnt rest and an enjoyable family meal cooked on the fantastic Aga. Cannot recommend this holiday home enough and look forward to returning for a summer holiday next time.

“Fabulous property.”

Lots of space, particularly in the kitchen/family room. Kitchen very well equipped, although the dishwasher was not working, awaiting replacement by the installers. We experienced a problem with the central heating during our stay, instead of switching off at 10pm the thermostat went up to 26.5 degrees and we had to override it. Good location for starting walks to Skiddaw and Dodd fells. We would stay again, and hopefully the snags will have been resolved.

Had a problem with the boiler so no heating. The owner was so helpful and really tried to resolve this. When she couldn't she offered a refund. I would definetly book this again. We loved it and it has everything that you would need. Views are stunning we had a wonderful short break

The property

It is easy to see why the owners of The Millstream fell in love with this truly charming character property which has now been lovingly restored and prepared for holiday use. Dating from the early 19thC this stone-built character, former water-driven, cotton mill lies in an enviable position on the south facing lower slopes of Skiddaw in the tiny village of Applethwaite, just a over a mile outside Keswick, and is handy for all facilities. With numerous walks literally from the door and delightful country lanes for cycling and rambling you will not be short of holiday activities. Oxley's Bistro and Health Spa just along the lane is open to non-members for spa treatments, lunches and evening mealsmwhilst The Pheasant at Crossthwaite (still within walking distance) is a traditional pub with a warm welcome and great food. Keswick offers excellent shopping, live theatre, cinema and weekly markets as well as many places to eat out. Year round lake cruises and seasonal boat hire on Derwentwater can be enjoyed by all the family. Accommodation: The Millstream is a most unusual property built on three floors with the main entrance at the top level from the parking area and garden. The entrance lobby has plenty of hanging space and boot rack for outdoor gear. A charming sitting room with open fire and several windows offers a restful retreat (flat screen TV with Freeview, DVD, Wi-Fi, bluetooth speaker). Also on this floor is a twin bedroom with TV/DVD (and with an additional hi-sleeper platform bed - please order as an extra single at the time of booking). Stairs from the upper landing access the middle floor where there are two further bedrooms - a master double with king-size bed and wash basin with en-suite shower and wc; a second double also with king-size bed and wash basin; and the family bathroom (bath with overhead shower, basin and wc). Door to the rear courtyard. Down again to the lowest floor you come to the delightful and spacious family room/kitchen which is sure to be the focus of many happy family meals and lazy breakfasts. A cosy seating area to one end has a large comfortable sofa, rocking chair and coffee table. A further seating area is located on the gallery overlooking the kitchen. Backdoor to outside steps. Useful utility room off the kitchen for laundry, tumble dryer and hanging rail, (third wc). The whole house has been carefully renovated and presented to a high standard with holiday comfort in mind and is restful and stylish. Carefully chosen subtle colour schemes and Laura Ashley furnishings and fabrics blend well with the numerous character features...exposed and painted stone walls, beams, deep set windows and various levels. Stairs, bedrooms and sitting room have fitted carpets and the kitchen has limestone flagstones with oak laminate in the sitting area. Outside: Parking in the driveway for two cars. Garden areas are on different levels with steps and terraces and there is a small courtyard outside the middle level door. Small children will need supervision. Garden bench, table and chairs. Pub 1.5 miles, Keswick centre 2 miles, Oxley's Bistro and Spa 350 yards.

Bassenthwaite 7 miles, Ullswater 16.6 miles; Cockermouth 13 miles.

The popular town of Keswick is the holiday centre of the North of the Lake District and has plenty to offer the visitor at any time of year. The town boasts numerous shops and restaurants to suit all tastes, as well as offering miniature golf, excellent parks, the famous Theatre by the Lake, a charming cinema, the Pencil Museum, a climbing wall, fishing and great mountain biking opportunities, whilst the beautiful lake of Derwentwater at the head of the stunning Borrowdale Valley is only a few minutes walk from the town centre. Nearby, between Braithwaite and Buttermere is the beautiful Newlands Valley, while picturesque Bassenthwaite Lake is well worth a visit. From a gentle countryside ramble to a challenging hike up Skiddaw or the famous Catbells, there really is something for everyone. Visit Castlerigg Stone Circle, the Jennings Brewery and Mirehouse, a grand house and gardens on the shores of the Bassenthwaite Lake, or take a fabulous boat trip around Derwentwater. With plenty of attractions for the kids, lovely parks and the nearby Lake District Wildlife Park this is a great Lakeland destination whatever the time of year.
