The property

Herdwick View is a striking Victorian residence nestled at the northern end of Lake Bassenthwaite, close to the market town of Cockermouth. The property was once home to butlers, housekeepers and chauffeurs, and lay abandoned for many years, but has since been brought back to life by a local family who have gone to great expense to create a fantastic holiday cottage that will be the basis of many fond holiday memories for years to come. The front door opens to a hallway with cloakroom and WC, while the welcoming lounge is furnished with leather sofas, arranged around a cosy woodburning stove and Smart TV with sound bar, making it a lovely room to sit and relax in as you enjoy the company of friends. The superb kitchen features a statement island unit and granite worktops and is equipped with quality appliances and includes a five-ring electric hob, electric double oven, microwave, dishwasher, American-style fridge freezer and a wine cooler and if you are an avid fan of Masterchef, there is even a TV! Leading from the kitchen is a beautiful dining room with picture windows and patio doors to the first of the two patios. Choose from four bedrooms to catch up on rest in; the ground floor offers a king-size bedroom with views across the garden and a luxury en-suite shower room. The first-floor bedrooms are all finished to the highest standard with luxurious en-suite facilities; the first is a king-size room with woodland views and an en-suite with feature bath and walk in shower, the next bedroom is again presented with a king-size bed and from the window seat you can enjoy views across the garden and in the winter the occasional glimpse of Lake Bassenthwaite and complemented by an en-suite bathroom, while the final bedroom is a double with an en-suite shower room, all of which include TVs and USB charging points. The cottage is screened on two sides by woodland that is a real haven for wildlife and to the south west, the grounds are more open, allowing the cottage both privacy and views. The south-facing patio is just the spot to relax with a drink in the sun and to the side of the house, the larger patio has dinning furniture. The outside space is complemented by a covered outdoor summer house with seating for all, a Sonos sound system and outdoor heaters. The access to Herdwick View is through Herdwick Croft, a small, family run caravan park, but privacy is offered as the final approach is through a gate and onto the private drive. Herdwick View is a popular choice for those attending weddings at the nearby Armathwaite Hall and is ideal for family and friends attending such celebrations. Located close to the waters of Lake Bassenthwaite and just ten minutes drive from Keswick, this is a beautiful area of the Lake District and offers a haven of peace and quiet in every corner. Just a short walk away you can access a myriad of footpaths within the high fells of the northern Lakes, while there is also the superb Whinlatter mountain bike trails and the award-winning Lake Distillery with its excellent range of spirits and popular bistro. Cockermouth is a fabulous choice for holidaymakers, best known as being the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian, of Mutiny on the Bounty fame, there's plenty of historic attractions here to explore including the National Trust owned Georgian family home of Wordsworth himself with wonderful exhibition rooms and riverside gardens, it's well-worth exploring. Cockermouth also offers its visitors a good selection of independent shops, food stores and delicious eateries including pubs, tearooms and restaurants, with its very own golf club too for a truly tranquil day. With plenty to see and do within easy reach, Herdwick View is an ideal base for a relaxing break in the Lake District.

About the location

Bassenthwaite Lake 7 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

The small country market town of Cockermouth is situated in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, yet only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but (of course) the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes – Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.
