Location Ambleside is a historic village, well-served with contemporary shops and sophisticated evening entertainments. It nestles off the northern shores of Lake Windermere, against a superb backdrop of Lake District fells - it's no wonder that Ambleside is a popular base for walking in the Lake District. Ambleside's shopping streets are full of character, scattered with traditional Lakeland cottages and attractive historic buildings. But you'll find everything you could need during a self-catering holiday; from tempting delicatessens and handy supermarkets for stocking up the kitchen, to outdoor clothing stores and fashionable boutiques. By night, why not sample some Lakeland ale in one of the many cosy pubs in Ambleside. Or, treat yourselves to a special meal at The Fulling Mill - just one of several excellent restaurants in Ambleside's village centre. There are also two quirky cinemas to choose from; Zeffirellis for mainstream movies and pizza lovers, or Fellinis Vegetarian Restaurant and Studio Cinema. Ambleside's location on the A591 makes it a great base for touring the wider Lake District. You're within easy reach of must-see locations such as the Troutbeck Valley, historic Grasmere and the breath-taking Langdale Valley. You can also explore without a car; stroll to Waterhead Pier and take a Windermere Lake Cruise to Bowness or Lakeside.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
