“We would just like to thank the owners.”

This was our second stay at Deer Thwaite this year, and feels very much a home from home and the best property we have stayed at on the Merewood estate. Plenty of space, bright and three large, comfortable bedrooms. Good location for public transport and handy for a stroll round Brockhole. Best of all is just watching the birds and squirrels on the feeders in the back garden area.

The property

Deer Thwaite is a charming three-bedroom cottage in Ecclerigg, Cumbria, close to Troutbeck Bridge, situated on a private estate of exclusive properties.

The cottage accommodates six visitors and offers a home-away-from-home while taking a self-catered stay in the Lake District National Park, which is bordered by well-liked sights and amenities, including Lake Windermere.

Before entering the homely sitting area with plush chairs, a Smart TV for entertainment, and an electric log effect fire, ideal to light after a day outdoors, park up in one of the three private spaces.

You'll find a variety of appliances in the kitchen/diner, where you can mix up delectable meals that you can enjoy in the kitchen, in the formal dining room, or in the garden for an outdoor gathering.

Return inside as the sky darkens to finish your evening routine in the bathroom before choosing one of three tastefully decorated bedrooms, including a king-size with en-suite, a second king-size, and a twin room with two small double beds with TV; all bedrooms have plenty of storage and plush furnishings to make you feel at home.

Grab your walking shoes in the morning and start planning your itinerary; Brockhole on Windermere, The Lake District Visitor Centre, offers a variety of activities, including treetop treks and archery, or maybe aboard a Windermere Lake Cruise or visit Holehird Gardens and its picturesque surroundings.

Next, proceed to Windermere, where you can play a round of golf in a friendly atmosphere at the Windermere Golf Club, visit the Beatrix Potter World Attraction, learn about the history of the region at the Windermere Jetty Museum - Stories of boats and steam, or explore the Windermere Outdoor Adventure Centre and sail or kayak on the lake.

Traveling north, stop in Ambleside to experience Stock Ghyll Force's breath-taking surrounds, stroll through Borrans Park, see Stagshaw Gardens, take a tour of Rydal Cave, or visit Wordsworth Grasmere, the former residence of famed poet Williams Wordsworth. Discover it all at Deer Thwaite.
