“The house was clean and comfortable in a quiet location as advertised although parking was an issue.”

Large forestry vehicles passing regularly meant that we couldn't park in the dedicated parking slot in front of the house and no-one had relayed this message on to us.

Large forestry vehicles passing regularly meant that we couldn't park in the dedicated parking slot in front of the house and no-one had relayed this message on to us. The website also said that one room would be a twin room but it was made up as a double. As it transpired, our party of 3 had become 2 due to Covid but it could have posed us a problem. Make sure you take everything with you including washing up liquid - there are no local shops!

The property

Just a few hundred yards from Beatrix Potter's former home, Stoney Croft is nestled in the peaceful village of Near Sawrey just outside Hawkshead village. Found along a quiet lane leading to Moss Eccles Tarn, Stoney Croft Cottage has a picture postcard setting that's guaranteed to inspire. Walks abound in all directions, the National Trust owned Tower Bank Arms is only a stone's throw away, and the cottage itself is a soothing retreat. Tastefully modernised to 4 star standards, the interior is homely, enjoys a spacious living room and separate dining area, and opens out to a serene sun deck. Despite the secluded feel, Hawkshead village remains close by and the car-ferry crossing over Lake Windermere to Bowness is minutes away. == Accommodation in detail Parking on the lane by the property for 1 car. Enter into the cosy yet contemporary lounge with wooden floor, deep-cushioned leather sofas and open fire. Separate, stylish dining room with access to the decked sun terrace. Neat, very well-equipped kitchen. Upstairs to the 2 bedrooms; 1 king-size double (which can also serve as a twin) and 1 double bedroom. Both bedrooms are beautifully presented in a calming shade. Modern house bathroom with shower over bath. Location A holiday cottage in Near Sawrey places you at the heart of the Lakes and close to Moss Eccles Tarn and tranquil Esthwaite Water (fictional home of Beatrix Potter's Jeremy Fisher!) which lies between Near Sawrey and Hawkshead village. Keen walkers will be brilliantly placed to reach the starting points of many of the Lake District's famous walks, and those looking for a manageable stroll in attractive surroundings will find many to choose from nearby. Nearby Hawkshead village is enchanting with its car-free cobbled streets, its air of history - fascinating historic attractions include the Hawkshead Grammar School museum (a real step back in time) and the former home of Beatrix Potter, open to the public at Hill Top. But the village is also your bolt hole for shops and facilities - stock up the kitchen with tasty local produce at the Honeypot delicatessen, and sample a few of the excellent eateries in the village. Another nearby must-see Lakeland village is Ambleside, a popular Lake District self-catering location for its friendly, lively centre and its position on the shores of Lake Windermere.

Please note: wood supplies can be purchased in Windermere or Ambleside at the local petrol stations. There is a garage in Hawkshead Motorbody Accident Repair that also supply wood/kindling and lighters

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

Hawkshead 2 miles.

The village of Sawrey is situated two miles from Hawkshead down the eastern side of Esthwaite Water, overlooked by the woods and tarns of Claife Heights. Sawrey consists of two separate hamlets - Near Sawrey and Far Sawrey - both with a cluster of picturesque cottages, tea rooms and pubs. Near Sawrey is famous for Hill Top, the 17th century farmhouse where Beatrix Potter wrote her acclaimed children's stories. Now a museum, owned and run by the National Trust, Hill Top is one of the most visited houses in the Lake District. Far Sawrey is the hamlet furthest away from Hawkshead and the nearest to the ferry point on Windermere. It offers a church and pub/restaurant with a beer garden. There are good walks in the area, including those to Claife Heights and in Grizedale Forest. It's also a great base for enjoying a wide variety of typical Lakeland pursuits - with watersports close at hand on Lake Windermere, fishing on nearby Esthwaite Water and, of course, fell walking.

Please note this property has a zip link bed. This will be made as a twin by default. Please contact the call center should you wish it to be a super king.
