“All was really good.”

Fantastic location and great facilities. The only thing that lets this cottage down is extremely poor internet access. You expect poor mobile signal in the lake district but poor internet in this day and age is probably unacceptable.

“Fabulous house, exactly as we hoped it would be from the description.”

Very spacious and comfortable, the beds were amazing! Beautiful quiet location with excellent access to walks from the doorstep and to drive to as well. Very memorable holiday. Great communication from Sykes Cottages throughout.

“This is a beautiful, very well equipped cottage and we made full use of the stunning garden despite the chilly April weather.”

A very easy walk into the pretty Hawkshead village along the path behind the garden that takes you across the field behind the church. The bedding and towels were all excellent quality and the welcome gift was a lovely touch. The cottage was immaculately clean but I think it may be worth moving the bin from under the sink as it was knocking the pipes and there was a slight leak which we reported to the Sykes team. We were the first guests after the 3rd lockdown and the cottage had obviously been having works done in the lockdown period. The property was very cold on arrival but the heating had been switched on and after the first day the temperature in the cottage was very comfortable. The front porch was held up by two pieces of timber and sadly the beautiful lattice work on either side of the porch had been removed. The interior had also been redecorated and there were no curtains in the main living area which made it feel less cosy. We had issues with the TV but this was very quickly sorted by a call to Sykes where the staff were very helpful. There was a photographer in the property when we arrived, I assume that the photos on the website will be updated to reflect the changes made to the property. I would definitely recommend staying in Roger Ground House, we had a lovely few days but please note the restricted headroom due to the low beams and doorway height, my son hit his head on more than one occasion!

The picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Visitors can wander the wealth of tiny alleyways, thoroughfares, archways and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th century houses. There are many pleasant inns, teashops, guest houses and gift shops in the village, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which houses an annually changing exhibition of the famous author’s illustrations and stories. The other famous Hawkshead enthusiast, William Wordsworth, attended the Old Grammar School in 1779-87, which still stands today, and you can visit the building where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form, and even see the desk into which he scratched his name as a small boy! Newby Bridge is ten miles away and offers attractions such as the Aquarium of the Lakes and Windermere Lake Cruises, sailing daily between Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside.
