The property

Ellis Howe is a delightful, traditional Lake District cottage in the hamlet of Torver, just two miles southwest of Coniston village. In 1881 it was described as a shop and post office. The main living room was then two separate rooms. One front room had a wooden counter and shelves, and the other held sacks of flour and sugar; more recently sweets and toys were sold from there. The property has been recently renovated and enjoys superb views of Coniston Old Man and the surrounding fells and is just a stroll away from two highly acclaimed pub restaurants. Ellis Howe has many original features; flagged floors, window shutters, fireplaces and beams which create a distinctive and homely atmosphere. A feature is the large oak-floored dining room with a wonderful view of Coniston Old Man and Dow Crag. Watching the scene change along with the weather whilst enjoying a meal together is an absolute treat! Accommodation Step inside this charming cottage to the welcoming lounge with character beams. Nestle in front of the multifuel burner whilst watching the TV from the plush sofa and chairs. You'll find lots of entertainment; LCD TV/DVD with DVDs, CDs, games, books, maps and local guides. The second sitting room is perfect for escaping to read! The kitchen is well-equipped for guests who love to cook, and the oak-floored dining room is perfect for planning the day ahead over a hearty breakfast. Or relax in the evening, ideal for family celebrations or socialising with friends. There is also a utility and ground-floor shower room. Choose from any one of two bedrooms which are all located on the first floor, a double, and a twin. The house bathroom has a shower over the bath. Outside there is a picnic table on the terrace for outdoor meals. There is also a seating area to the front of the cottage next to a raised lawn and to the side, a cottage garden planted with roses, shrubs, bulbs and perennials. A lay-by opposite the cottage can accommodate two cars. Location Torver is 3 miles from the village of Coniston and has 2 very well know pubs, Church House Inn and The Wilsons Arms. A Torver holiday cottage takes you slightly away from the hustle and bustle of Bowness and Lake Windermere to a wilder landscape full of adventure. Coniston Water is famous for its part in Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons, with Peel Island being the setting for the 'Wild Cat Island' featured in the story. The lake is also known for Donald Campbell's water speed record attempt in 'Bluebird'. But the real magic comes from the breath-taking surroundings; dramatic fells including Coniston Old Man, wild woodlands and wonderful Lake District walks. You'll have access to no end of stunning routes, from leisurely strolls to challenging ascents. Coniston village is a peaceful village centre, well equipped for stocking up the kitchen with traditional butcher, artisan bakery and supermarket. There are lovely tea rooms, cafes, restaurants and a number of traditional Lakeland pubs in Coniston village including the award-winning brewery the Coniston Brewing Co. For a cultured day out, head to Brantwood historic house - an impressive residence overlooking the lake, once home to John Ruskin the famous artist, writer and creative thinker. You'll find a range of events on offer, such as talks, concerts, craft workshops and even outdoor theatre. For a memorable getaway, choose Ellis Howe.
