The property

Tucked away in one of the Lake District’s most historic and tranquil settings, this beautifully refurbished 18th-century cottage offers a rare blend of character, comfort, and location. Positioned beside Wordsworth’s former home at Rydal Mount, the cottage sits at the very start of two of the area’s most iconic walks – the Coffin Route to Grasmere and the renowned Fairfield Horseshoe – making it an exceptional base for walkers and lovers of the outdoors. Inside, the property has been thoughtfully restored to combine original charm with modern comfort.

The cottage features one elegant double bedroom and a sunny and bright twin bedroom, two contemporary bathrooms, one being private en-suite.

This makes it ideal for couples, friends, or small families seeking both comfort and privacy.

The welcoming living space centres around a wood-burning stove, perfect for relaxing after a day on the fells, while the fully equipped kitchen provides everything needed for easy dining.

Outside, guests can enjoy both sun and shelter.

To the rear, an enclosed and sheltered patio with outdoor furniture provides a private space for dining or unwinding, while the lawned front garden offers a peaceful spot to sit and take in the surrounding scenery.

The quiet setting provides a true sense of escape, yet within moments from some of the Lake District’s most celebrated landscapes, with Grasmere and Ambleside close by.

Whether you are setting out on a morning hike, exploring nearby villages, or simply unwinding in peaceful surroundings steeped in literary history, this cottage offers a uniquely refined Lake District experience

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £250.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside with its numerous shops makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips, and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and the lakeside at Waterhead with parkland offering lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach. A walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre. Ambleside has plenty of restaurants and pubs to suit all tastes from great fish & chips to its two Michelin Star restaurants and all tastes in between are catered for.
