Cumbria foodie scene
In recent years Cumbria has become renowned for being a place of culinary excellence and has developed quite a ‘foodie’ scene, attracting many famous chefs and restaurateurs.
Whilst staying at one of our Cumbrian self catering holiday cottages, you will be in close vicinity to a tantalising choice of cosy cafes, gastropubs and high end restaurants, including the regions famous Michelin star restaurant L’Enclume in Cartmel and the Gilpin restaurant, Windermere, as featured in the BBC Two series ‘Chefs on Trial’, to name but a couple.
Many of these eateries celebrate Cumbrian produce and ‘source to plate’ dining, using the most local and freshest ingredients on offer and what a plentiful bounty is available!
You can, of course buy the best local food while you are out and about during the day and cook a feast right in the comfort of your own self-catering Cumbrian cottage. Whether eating out or eating in, here are some things to look out for.
June through to August is the best time to eat Cumbrian lamb, and breeds like Herdwick are a popular choice amongst both professional and amateur cooks. Delicious local cheeses include the Eden Smokie produced by the Appleby Creamery and Tovey produced at the Thornby Moor Dairy – both are very popular examples of local cheeses and are great as part of a picnic or lunch. Rare breed Cumbrian beef like Belted Galloway is good to eat all year around and is noted for its excellent flavour – what better centerpiece to a Sunday roast? Cumbrian pork is also excellent and is used in the famous Cumberland sausages that are sure to bring to life any cooked breakfast. Needless to say you’ll also have your pick of lots of lovely fresh fruit and vegetables as well as game, smoked fish and meats, all produced close by to our cottages, giving you a real taste of the region.
Cumbria season by season
The summertime is by far the most popular time to visit Cumbria, the countryside is in full bloom and the weather allows easy access to the fells and waters. This is a time when you may wish to embark on family picnics or to hire a rowing boat for a romantic trip on the water. In the evening, towns and villages are busy with diners and people out to sample a bit of Cumbrian entertainment and hospitality. Cumbria is, however an all season holiday destination, in winter, romantic getaways are popular – just the two of you in a rural hideaway, enjoying views of the snow-capped hills around you and clear starlit skies. Spring is as picturesque as autumn is dramatic and both are great times of year for walking or more technical pursuits like climbing and scrambling.
So as you can see there is never a bad time to go self-catering in Cumbria. If you can’t find what you are looking for, or need further information, please contact us and one of our highly experienced staff will help you find the perfect holiday experience!
