Let’s take a look at some of our dog friendly cottages in Windermere and the surrounding area. We’re sure that tails will be wagging with joy at what you find. Dog friendly cottages in and around Windermere put you in a perfect location for lots of doggy activities and treats. For ‘man’s best friend’ there’s secure, private gardens, cosy log burners and walks straight from the cottage door. Perfect for evening ‘walkies’ and early morning run-arounds.

We welcome pets to stay free!

Food and Drink

As expected in such a popular holiday area, there’s a healthy choice of dog friendly eateries, including Coffee Bar 7 in Windermere.

Dogs are welcomed to ‘drink responsibly’ at The Boathouse Bar & Restaurant at Windermere Marina Village. Plus traditional pubs The Royal Oak and the Ship Inn in Bowness.

For supplies, visit the superb local supermarket Booths. Or check out the small Co-Op and Sainsburys shops. Don’t forget to nip into Lakeland Pet Supplies on the main road running through the town for some doggy treats.

Attractions

Travelling to and from Windermere is so easy in fact, you may choose to go car free! About a half an hour walk from Windermere town centre gets you to the lakeshore. Dogs also love a trip on the scenic 599 open top bus and Windermere ferry! Dogs travel for free all year round with Windermere Lake Cruises.

For a shortcut to Windermere’s ‘secret’ western shore, catch the dog friendly car ferry, carrying up to 18 cars and over 100 passengers. Here you can visit Grizedale Forest, a particularly great day out for dogs. Or catch the minibus service during the summer months to Hawkshead and surrounding countryside. The area was beloved by Beatrix Potter and her collie Kep. Both Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway and the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway allow dogs.

Walks

The Lake District is one of the top holiday destinations for pets and their well-behaved owners. It features some of the best walking scenery in the UK, for all paw walking abilities, and plenty of tarns and lakes for cooling off. Plus, there are the pebbled beaches and extensive woodlands. A natural playground full of nature’s best toys, sticks and stones, for endless games of fetch.

At Bowness Bay you’ll find plenty to do including several ‘Miles without Stiles’ walks, ideal for less active pets and owners.

A great one is the amble from Bowness to the National Trust sign-posted Cockshott Point. This circular route makes for a perfect slice of evening of fresh air. Here you’ll enjoy the tranquil lakeside views and wildlife (short leads for dogs during breeding season, from March to July).

Whilst staying in Windermere you should not miss the uphill, but short ramble to Orrest Head. You’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the lake, over to Coniston and the Langdale peaks. You can extend this walk north to the quiet valley of Troutbeck and visit pup friendly pub The Mortal Man.

If you’re flexible on location, why not browse Lakelovers pet friendly cottages across the Lakes.

Once your holiday is booked, just don’t forget to take your camera with you as you’re guaranteed some excellent dog posing shots.
