Family friendly locations

It goes without saying that all of the towns and villages in the Lake District are family friendly. However, here are some suggestions that may help you decide on a location for your holiday cottage.

On the south shore of Lake Windermere, which is bustling with activity, is the Lakes Aquarium. Aquariums are a colourful, calming and somewhat hypnotic experience for children, as well as being educational. This small aquarium boasts lots of different creature, snakes, lizards, frogs and of course fish from all over the world – you can help at feeding times and even handle some of the exhibits. The aquarium also has great themed activities that take place on a regular basis across the calendar, making this a perfect attraction when rain-clouds appear!

If you prefer to be on the water as opposed to seeing what lives in it, then a boat trip could be just the ticket. One of the most popular activities for families to the northern Lakes is a trip on an Ullswater steam boat. This is an all-weather activity, as you can choose to sit inside the boat or outside. Either way children, babies included, love to watch as you cut your way through amazing views and adore spotting other boats, water buoys and water birds.

Located in the Troutbeck Valley, south Lakeland, you can find Lakeland Pony Treks who offer riding for all ages and levels of experience. You can ride for just half an hour or up to a full day on ponies or horses, through the beautiful countryside around Limefitt Park.

Keep an eye on our blog for lots of ideas for thing to do in the Lake District with your family and other ideas. As you can see, all of our child friendly cottages in the Lake District are but a stone’s throw away from exciting activities for everyone to enjoy.

Feeding your Family

All of Lakelovers’ child friendly accommodation in the Lake District are self-catering and that means you can enjoy the flexibility of when and what you eat. Being in the Lake District means you have some of the best local food that the UK has to offer, such as Cumbrian Sausages, an excellent choice as part of a hearty breakfast maybe with some bacon from some of the districts rare breed pigs. For an evening meal, you may opt to serve lamb, the Herdwick variety is particularly tasty, with locally sourced vegetables.

Of course, there is no need to be a slave to the cooker because the Lake District is also home to some excellent child friendly restaurants and pubs that cater for all tastes and budgets. For a lunchtime excursion, why not try the Brown Horse Inn located in Winster near Bowness-on-Windermere. Inside this rustic pub you will find open fires and wooden beams – on the menu you will find a host of local produce, cooked to perfection. And if your children are grown up enough to appreciate the finer things in life, then one of the district’s top restaurants may be an option for a real treat. Top chef Simon Rogan owns and runs two amazing eateries in Cartmel, L’Enclume and Rogan and Co. Both are fine dining experiences to cherish.

There’s certainly no shortage of local dairy farms in the Lake District.  So, ice-cream lovers why not track down the ‘sticky toffee’ or ‘Lakeland gingerbread’ flavour Windermere Ice Cream from E.Atkinson & Sons toyshop in Bowness-on-Windermere, made with local milk!  Or, if you’re visiting the western Lakes, staying in one of our Keswick properties perhaps, you may fancy a detour from the beautiful Buttermere lakeside path to Sykes Farm Tearoom for an ice-cream from their own herd or one of the best chocolate brownies around!

With Lakelovers child and baby friendly cottages in the Lake District you are getting the best of both worlds, home from home comfort allowing you a relaxed space and the excitement of all the amazing activities and venues that are to be found right on your doorstep. We look forward to welcoming you.
