The Lake District is now firmly on the map as one of the UK’s top foodie destinations.

From Michelin-starred and fine dining restaurants to welcoming tearooms, cosmopolitan bars and lively bistros; gastro micro-breweries, artisan coffee-houses and bakers; dining in the Lake District really is a class above the rest. It is not only the dark lake District night sky that is filled with stars.

The Lake District is home to some real ‘starry’ heavy weights in the foodie world. There are several megastars in the Michelin-starred dining category, closely followed by many rising stars with culinary talent in abundance. For luxury dining you may have heard of L’Enclume, but have you been to The Forest Side? Holbeck Ghyll is a classic, have you tried the Samling? The Old Stamp House, Rogan & Co, Fellini’s vegetarian restaurant and jazz bar, Gilpin Spice restaurant. More Michelin-stars that you’ll know what to do with. Best to visit a few times, we say!

Foodie centres like Cartmel, Grasmere and the Lyth Valley have become glittery sought-out destinations for those looking to enjoy some of the finer things that the region has to offer. And the Lake District’s rich and diverse local markets, like the famous Orton farmer’s market in the Eden Valley and Keswick’s open market (the largest in the UK) attracts foodie experts nationwide.

Following the trend for ‘local’, many of the Lake District’s coveted tables, decorated with positive reviews by the likes of Jay Reiner, are well off the beaten track, down lanes set amidst rural communities and in the beating throb of local Lake District culture.

There’s nowhere else that play host to the world’s top marmalade or longest sausage competitions. There is no other holiday that tastes quite as good as a Lake District break.
