Lake District Sailing Breaks

Lake District Sailing Breaks

Lakelovers Cottages for Lake District Sailing Breaks

Whilst there is only one official lake in the Lake District, Bassenthwaite Lake, the region is home to non-other than 16 ‘meres’ or ‘waters’, one of which is Windermere – England’s largest natural body of water.

The famous waters of the Lake District are the perfect opportunity to take in the stunning beauty of the surrounding mountain landscape and the options, when it comes to hiring a boat in the Lake District, are plentiful.

At one end of the scale you have luxury yachts that will whisk you away over the Lakeland waters, serve you a glass of bubbly, allow you to relax in comfort while enjoying the view or act as part of the crew.

At the other end of the boating holiday spectrum you will find exhilarating experiences like white water rafting down the ghylls of the region. What all the Lakes sailing and boat trips have in common is that they are experiences that will never be forgotten.

Lakelovers have close to 500 holiday properties scattered the length and breadth of the region and so if you are looking for sailing or boating holidays in the Lake District, we’ll have accommodation close by a superb water facility and for all budgets.

Large or small, our properties are all unique, but most importantly, they have all been given the VisitEngland seal of approval and have been awarded 3 stars or more. In fact, we have the largest collection of Gold award properties in the Lake District and so you’ll find quality and finesse across our collection.

So, let’s get shipshape and Bristol fashion, hoist the main sail and explore what the Lake District has to offer when looking for holiday boating experiences.

Windermere Lake Cruises – Tours, Ferries and More

Windermere Lake Cruises run a fleet that operate both as cruise boats and as ferries and sailing on Windermere is one of the region’s most popular attractions. This is why we’ve teamed up with Windermere Lake Cruises to offer special discounts for our guests via our Lakelovers Recommends card.

Hop aboard at Ambleside, Bowness, Brockhole or Lakeside, relax and enjoy the extraordinary panoramic views as you circumnavigate the UK’s largest stretch of inland water.

Whilst cruising, one of the crew will relay interesting facts about the history of the area and some of the landmarks you will pass.

You can stay aboard the boat for the entirety of the cruise or you can jump off at any of the stops en route and then board a later boat to continue the trip. Dogs are welcome too!

Windermere Lake Cruises also offer a range of other services including rowing and self-drive boats that are available for hire.

Glenridding Sailing Centre – Small Sailing Boats

Boating

holidays in the Lake District come in many shapes and sizes, so if you prefer to be at the helm of the vestal, then maybe the Glenridding Sailing Centre is worth considering.

Based on the shores of Ullswater, one of the most picturesque and tranquil spots in the Lake District, the centre runs courses and activities to suit adults and children, novices and the more experienced.

The majority of the courses use small boats that typically hold between 1 and 3 sailors.

For children aged 6 and over, the Swallows and Amazons activity involves taking to the water in a boat, hunting for treasure and a swashbuckling finale. Adults, meanwhile can enjoy taster sessions or begin racking up some Royal Yachting Association certificates while having fun learning to sail.

In addition, there are group activities and you can also hire sailing boats, canoes and kayaks should you want to explore Ullswater more independently.

Steam Yacht Gondola – Cruising

Head over to Coniston and you can take a boat tour on a Victorian Steam Yacht Gondola. Run by the National Trust, this vessel is an original Victorian boat, that has been rebuilt and now once again graces the waters of Coniston.

There are a variety of tours and cruises to choose from, the Walkers Cruise, for example, will take you across the water to one of three disembarkation points. From there you get to walk through the countryside back to Coniston.

For those who are looking for something more indulgent, why not dine aboard the gondola? There is a picnic cruise, during which you are given a traditional picnic basket for 2, filled with delicious goodies, napkins, crockery and glasses, plus there’s a champagne option to consider (if you really want to push the boat out).

Another dining option is to take afternoon tea while on the cruise – now what could be more Victorian than that?

Keswick Adventure Centre – White Water Rafting

In the north of the Lake District at Keswick Adventure Centre, activities on the water come in the shape of things that are a little higher octane and provide the perfect option for the thrill seekers amongst you.

Here, the likes of water rafting and white water tubing are the activities that float their boat. Both involve travelling down fast flowing water at speed and are on offer to anyone aged 12 or over.

Total Adventure – Stand-up Paddleboarding (SUP)

We’re not quite sure if this fits under the sailing category, but we can’t not mention stand-up paddle boarding when talking about watersports in the Lakes. And whilst Hawaii Windermere is not, the super-fun sport that has its roots in surfing has certainly found a home in our beautiful lakes and rivers. SUP is fun and easy for all, from couples to groups and even dogs! There are initiation games, similar to turning your canoe, like running across several boards, and inevitably SUP involves getting wet. As well as fun, SUP is a great way of relaxing, fully enjoying the lakes and is an effective low impact exercise too. Head over to our partner Total Adventure for a fun new watersport that is made for Lake District lakes.
