Established as a steamer pier, the small area of Lakeside at the south end of Lake Windermere became a popular holiday cottage destination after the Lakeside railway station opened in 1869; joining Furness and Newby Bridge to Ambleside and Bowness via the steamer ferry, which was also owned by British Rail until 1968 when it was sold to a private company, following the close of the railway line in 1965. In 1973, however, the station was re-opened as the heritage Lakeside to Haverthwaite Railway, offering steam train journeys between the two stations. They offer a range of fabulous events throughout the year, such as Ghost Train, Santa Specials, Thomas the Tank Engine and even the option to be a Loco driver for the day!
A popular tourist attraction, you can choose to buy tickets for the rail trip alone. Or as part of a park, rail and sail ticket which includes a trip on the Lake Windermere Cruises.

As well as the famous railway and steamer pier, Lakeside is also generally considered to encompass nearby Finsthwaite, Backbarrow, Haverthwaite and Newby Bridge. We have a selection of Lakeside cottages throughout these areas. From converted farmhouses and barn conversions to riverbank cottages and traditional Lakeland homes. Our self-catering Lakeside accommodation offers a wide selection of interior features. Such as wooden floors and exposed beams, as well as 21st-century modern luxuries.
Lakelovers’ Lakeside holiday cottages allow you to relax in a 5 star hot-tub. One overlooking the local fells and fields and indulge in complimentary toiletries.
Spend quality time with family and friends in the games rooms or enjoy watching a good movie on the LED TV. Love to cook? Why not choose one of our self-catering Lakeside properties with an AGA? Lakeside out and about
Once away from one of our Lakeside holiday cottages there’s plenty to do. As well as the fabulous Lakeside Railway and Windermere Lake cruises to Ambleside and Bowness, there is also the Lakes Aquarium, located at the Lakeside Pier. The 3rd most visited attraction in the Lakes, the aquarium features fish and sea creatures from in and around the area. It’s open 7 days a week, with reasonable priced entrance fees and houses the 1872 Café and Gift Shop.
There are plenty of restaurants and shops in nearby Newby Bridge, including the Swan Inn, Garden View Restaurant, Lakeside Hotel and the Huntsman Inn; all popular and offering family friendly dining.
To take advantage of the great outdoors, which lets face it, is the Lake Districts best offering of all, why not visit Fell Foot Park? National Trust members get free parking here and it is the perfect place for family picnics. If you prefer not to dine on homemade sandwiches and snacks, you can always visit the small on-site Café. There is also a National Trust gift shop and boat hire, available primarily during the main tourist season.
Lakeside cottages offer a great self-catering base for those looking to explore the wider Lake District, beyond the central Ambleside and Windermere areas; but with the ability to still quickly and easily access both areas. Not looking for a cottage? We also have a range of Lodges in the Lake District too.
