On the banks for the River Kent, at Cowan Head, just ten minutes’ drive from Windermere Village, Beckmickle is a lovingly refurbished cottage that offers high quality accommodation in a very pretty location. Taking its name from the ancient woodland that can be found a little upstream from the cottage, the area is a haven for wildlife including a wide range of birds, the occasional otter and Roe deer.
Beckmickle is presented with a lovely open plan living space with a welcoming log burning stove and high quality kitchen. Offering two bedrooms, a king size and a single, the cottage is ideal for couples or a small family.
Ideally positioned to have easy access to the best of everything the Lake District has to offer from the great outdoors, fine dining, culture and heritage, the visitor can choose to stay closer to home and enjoy the fantastic riverbank walk to Staveley with its popular craft bakery, cafes and acclaimed brewery, or head high into the fells of the neighbouring valleys of Kentmere and Longsleddale. The popular long distance foot path, “The Dalesway” passes through Cowan Head as it follows the river Kent through the valley.
Accommodation In Detail
A private road leads to the Cowan Head estate where the former water mill has been converted into luxury apartments, but continue past and you will find a pretty row of whitewashed, terrace cottages, that stand on the banks of the river and which would have once been home to those who worked at the mill.
The front door opens to a small porch with coat hooks and boot rack before opening onto the welcoming, open plan, living accommodation. There is a comfortable sofa and armchair, TV and cosy log burning stove, however the favourite seat in the house is the beautiful window seat that overlooks the river and the meadows beyond and from here guests can keep their eye open for the abundant wildlife that make the area their home, including herons, dippers, goosanders and even the occasional kingfisher or otter. To the rear of the living space is a well-planned contemporary kitchen and family dining table. The kitchen is very well equipped with a quality inventory, four ring electric hob, electric oven, microwave and dishwasher. The under stairs unit discreetly hides the integral fridge/freezer. Adjacent to the back door the utility room is home to the washer drier and the cloakroom WC.
Heading upstairs, there is a choice of two bedrooms. To the front is a welcoming, well furnished, kingsize room which enjoys the river view, and to the rear a pretty single bedroom. The bedrooms are complemented by a superb family bathroom with p-shaped bath with shower over, basin and WC.
Back outside, and to the rear of the cottage there is a small private terrace with bistro garden furniture. There is private parking for two cars – in the car port at the end of the terrace or in front of the cottage – most guests prefer to park in the car port so that their car does not block the beautiful view. Within the car port the owners have added a cycle rack for the secure storage of mountain bikes.
The owners respectfully point out that the river is deep and fast flowing and as such parents should not leave children unattended near the river.
It's hard to describe the magic of this location; at the foot of Kentmere approached by a maze of picturesque lanes. Even when explored by car, this area is one of the Lake District's most beautiful with Lake Windermere and the village of Windermere only 10 minutes away.
The nearest village is Staveley, which places you at the heart of a real Lakeland community. The pretty village lies at the gateway to the Kentmere Valley, in a convenient location between Kendal and Windermere.
Staveley is alive with artisan crafts and art galleries, but it's also an absolute treat for foodies. In the Staveley Mill Yard, you'll find the famous More Artisan Bakery, the popular walkers' cafe 'Wilf's Cafe' and also the award-winning Hawkshead Brewery and Beer Hall (selling 'beer tapas' bar food.) You'll have to try them all! The perfect Lake District pub is the Eagle & Child - one of the most highly-regarded pubs in the area and a perfect choice for a bar meal out.
To stock up your kitchen and explore further afield, you only need drive a few miles on the A591 to Windermere village. There, you'll find a high class Booths supermarket and many other useful shops. From Windermere village, the A591 provides your main route into the heart of the Lakes, making this cottage's setting a very convenient Lake District holiday base.
Only 10 minutes from Windermere and Bowness, 15 minutes from Kendal and twenty minutes from the Yorkshire Dales you'll find something for everyone. The Gateway Inn and the Plumgarths food centre with farm shop, bakery and popular cafe are a short distance away.
