With carefully chosen antique furnishings throughout this amazing farmhouse is ideal for family celebrations, special occasions and simply spending time with family and friends The excellent living accommodation offers a spacious and welcoming lounge that overlooks the garden, a cosy reading room and a large kitchen/ diner with antique dining table and traditional Aga. Choose from four bedrooms, one with superb ensuite facilities, which are complemented by a smart family shower room and a well-appointed house bathroom. A private cottage garden wraps around the rear of the property with a choice of places to sit and relax and a large patio with outdoor dining furniture. The adjoining barn doubles as a boot room and is big enough to offer secure storage for mountain bikes, canoes and other outdoor gear Situated on the edge of the hamlet of Staveley In Cartmel, Fairrigg is just a mile or so from the southern tip of Lake Windermere at Newby Bridge and the popular Swan Inn serving a great range of local food and ales and only a five minute drive from the renowned “foodie” destination of Cartmel home to the famous Sticky Toffee Pudding and the acclaimed and Michelin award winning L'Enclume. == Accommodation in detail The final approach to Fair Rigg Old Farm is down a narrow lane with grass growing in the middle where it ends at the cottage with only a public footpath and access to the field beyond. Guests arrive, as you would expect, from a traditional farmhouse, at the back door and step from the porch into the welcoming kitchen. The fitted kitchen benefits from an imposing island unit. The kitchen features a traditional Aga with double oven and two hotplates. Extra cooking facilities include a two ring electric hob and combination microwave and grill. The kitchen is also equipped with a fridge and dishwasher (the freezer and the laundry facilities are located in the Boot Room). The antique gate-leg dining table is just ideal for a social dinner with family or friends or a hearty Lakeland breakfast as you plan the day ahead. The cosy sitting room is a welcome retreat with comfortable sofas and armchairs and welcoming log burning stove and for those wanting to escape with a good book or the weekend papers the reading room is just the spot to do this. As you climb the traditional oak stairs to the first floor the true age of the property becomes more apparent with steps leading up and down to the bedrooms, slopping floors, oak beamed walls and ceiling and a wealth of history and character. There are four bedrooms to choose from. On the first floor there are three beautifully furnished pretty bedrooms all with views over the garden; two are presented with king size beds and one with a double bed. These bedrooms are complemented a luxurious family shower room with walk shower, basin and WC and the house bathroom with bath with shower over, basin and wc. On the top floor, and beautifully presented in the eves is the master bedroom suite with superking bed and a superb ensuite bathroom with feature roll top bath with shower attachment, basin and WC. To the side of the property the barn offers a large boot room with lots of space to securely store mountain bikes, canoes and outdoor gear and the utility room with washing machine, tumble drier, sink and is also home to the freezer. A pretty lawned garden, surrounded by mature shrubs and trees, wraps around the rear and side of the farmhouse and includes benches and picnic table along with a large patio both with outdoor dining furniture. Part of the garden is left as a wild life haven and guests regularly see deer, foxes and badgers that live in the valley and a whole host of birdlife that make the garden their home. To the side of the property there is parking for four cars, though guests are respectfully asked to park with care as a foot path and access to the farmer's field passes along the side of the parking area. Location The southern end of Lake Windermere is renowned for its peaceful atmosphere, being much quieter than the busier Lake District holiday destinations further up the lake. However, you're very close to the hamlet of Lakeside and Lakeside Pier, where the famous Lake Windermere steamers depart regularly to Bowness and Ambleside - a wonderful way to explore these areas without driving. There are some lovely walks in the area, such as Wainwright's Finsthwaite Heights route from Newby Bridge. The route approaches High Dam - a picturesque tarn that you might just have to yourselves on quieter days. You'll also find several Lake District family attractions within easy reach. Also at Lakeside is the Lakes Aquarium - a fresh water aquarium displaying local wildlife. The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway offers an opportunity to take a short trip on a restored traditional steam train. Lake District historic sites such as Holker Hall and Gardens, Cartmel Priory, Stott Park Bobbin Mill, Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall are all within easy reach by car, with no need to navigate through busy tourist areas. This unspoilt medieval village of Cartmel is situated in a quiet valley in one of England's most outstanding areas of natural beauty on the fringe of the Lake District National Park is only a fifteen minute drive from Durham Bridge Barn. Offering stunning views of the South Lakeland District fells and countryside, Cartmel has grown up around its famous 12th Century medieval Priory Church. It is a special place where ancient history and tradition mingle effortlessly with the present day. Although steeped in history, Cartmel is not trapped in time and the village offers today's visitors many modern surprises in the form of fine quality attractions, shops, a wide variety of traditional Lakeland inns and cutting edge gourmet restaurants including the internationally acclaimed Michelin Star restaurant, L'Enclume. Around the village square you will discover a delightful assortment of genuine 16th - 18th century buildings. All this and the famous Cartmel racecourse providing national hunt racing in its most original format is just off the centre of the village square. With its party crowds and funfair, Cartmel rekindles the social gathering tradition of the original steeple to steeple chases.
