A short walk from the cottage, at Nichol End, the regular launch that runs a regular service stopping off at various points around the lake which can be combined to offers some fantastic walking along the lakeshore through Manesty and Brandlehow, to reach the popular viewpoints of Ashness Bridge and Surprise View or the more adventurous will head to the high fells that dominate the skyline of the Newland Valley. Relax in front of the fire at the popular Farmers Arms, serving tasty local produce and traditional Lakeland Ales. Park on the private parking space directly in front of the house and two steps lead to the front door that opens a hallway that offers plenty of space for coats, boots and outdoor gear. From here stairs lead to the first floor; the spacious dual aspect lounge is bright and airy with comfortable sofas, relaxing armchairs are arranged around a beautiful vintage fireplace with living flame gas fire and a large screen Smart TV. From this elevated position above the rooftops the views of Derwentwater are a joy with the high fells beyond and the original artwork is a real feature of Farrier House. The spacious open plan kitchen dining room has a contemporary feel with smart fitted units, integral appliances and is well equipped to the highest standard.
Choose from three beautifully appointed bedrooms. On the first floor the master bedroom is presented with a welcoming king size bed and again offers roof top views to Derwentwater. On the second floor, and set in the eves, of the house are two comfortable double rooms which are complemented by a family bathroom with bath, shower cubicle and WC, and a luxury shower room with large shower, basin and WC.
To the front of the house there is a private parking space for one car with additional on-street parking is available nearby.
The village of Portinscale is a quiet village on the north east shores of Derwentwater, within easy reach of Keswick and with easy access to easy access to the lake and a great choice of local walks. The popular local pub the Farmers Arms server's great food and local beer and a short walk through the village leads to the imposing Lingholme Estate where foodies can relax over breakfast, lunch or tea at the award winning Lingholme Kitchen and Walled Garden. The Chalet right across the street is ideal for breakfast and lunch.
The nearby market town of Keswick is one of the Lake District's most popular destinations. This friendly town hosts the very popular twice weekly market that has recently won the coveted “Best Outdoor Market” in the Great British Market Awards. Keswick also offers a fantastic array of shops offering everything from craft bakeries and local produce, antiques, crafts, outdoor clothing and much, much more. Keswick is a level one mile walk along a footpath from the cottage.
If you are looking for somewhere to eat and drink, a week just won't be long enough to sample the great range of pubs, restaurants, bistros, cafes and wine bars! For a great evening out why not visit the 100 year old Alhambra offering first class cinema entertainment in traditional surroundings or enjoy an evening at “the most beautiful and friendly theatre in Britain”, the 400 seat Theatre By The Lake on the shores of Derwentwater.
Enjoy a cruise on Derwentwater, walk onto the fells; - Cat Bells, Skiddaw, Coledale Horeshoe and Blencathra are all nearby; head underground at Honister Slate Mines or take the Via Ferrata challenge; enjoy mountain biking or follow the walking trails in Whinlatter Forest. For steam train enthusiasts there is the little train at Threlkeld Mining museum or the L'al Ratty which heads up into the hills from Ravenglass on the West Coast.
For day trips throughout the Lake District Ullswater is a short drive away offering lake cruises, great walking and the beautiful Aira Force Waterfall; Buttermere and Crummock Water offer sublime scenery; Ashness Bridge and Surprise View, situated above the Borrowdale Valley, should not be missed and perhaps even a cup of tea and homemade cake in the unspoilt village of Watendlath. Shepherd's Café at the foot of Shepherd's Crag, a favourite venue for climbers, is a tearoom run on High Lodore farm serving delicious homemade lunches and teas, just 10 minutes walk from the launch jetty at Lodore and well worth a visit.
