This romantic and poetic little rustic hideaway is one of several self-catering properties which make up the historic ‘Stepping Stones’ residence – home to William Wordsworth’s son and family for over a century. The breathtaking setting is quite unique, at the foot of Loughrigg Fell and surrounded by the countryside which inspired Wordsworth’s poetry.
The celebrated stepping stones cross the River Rothay, and a path leads on to tranquil Rydal Water. What a place! Despite the secluded and peaceful pace of this real Lakeland gem, the vibrant centre of Ambleside is only a short distance away.
NOTE - This property will be a Friday changeover from 16th November 2018
Accommodation in detail
This wonderfully rustic little cottage apartment is found up several stone steps and through a section of gardens to your entrance door. Enter into the cosy lounge / dining room with an open fire for cooler evenings. The bedroom is beautifully furnished with Laura Ashley furniture and complementary soft furnishings. The bathroom is en-suite, with a bath and shower over, ideal for long soaks after a hard day on the fells. The kitchen is compact but well equipped with ample storage, electric cooker and a small fridge/freezer. Outside the gardens are beautiful with views over the famous stepping stones and complete with garden furniture to enjoy al-fresco living. Garden Cottage sleeps 2 guests from age 6 upwards.
This secluded location near Rydal Water, one of the Lake District's smaller lakes, is even more special thanks to strong connections with Wordsworth's poetry. Walks around Rydal Water can take in Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount - two of Wordsworth's famous homes. His favourite viewpoint can also be reached at the west end of the lake, and the tranquil surroundings are truly inspirational - not just to writers!
The location is usefully close by to the vibrant centre of Ambleside. There you'll find fabulous food, tasty delicatessens, lovely Lakeland pubs and excellent restaurants - even a jazz bar and cinema. The shores of Lake Windermere can be enjoyed at nearby Waterhead, where ferries depart to carry you to Bowness or Lakeside.
