Staveley-in-Cartmel is a small and sleepy hamlet at the southern end of Lake Windermere, close to Lakeside Pier and the small village of Newby Bridge. There are several pubs to choose from nearby and a handy shop if you'd prefer not to go too far for your essentials.
To explore the popular Lake District holiday destinations of Bowness and Ambleside, you only need catch a Windermere Lake Cruise from Lakeside Pier. The steamers travel the full length of the lake with stops at both destinations.
It's also really quick to drive to Bowness from your self-catering cottage in Lakeside. The Lake Road leads up the eastern shores of Lake Windermere, passing the Windermere Marina, branching off to Windermere Golf Club and arriving in Bowness Bay.
