“This is a super property, extremely comfortable and in a fabulous setting.”

We thoroughly enjoyed our week’s stay although the snowy weather did hamper us somewhat. However, we were snug and cosy and the scenery was fabulous. We would recommend this property.

The property

Built around the turn of the century at the height of the Arts and Crafts movement, Applethwaite Hall is one of the Lake District's most remarkable country houses. Recently, and sensitively, redeveloped to an extremely high standard, the Hall benefits from a wealth of period features. Muirhead is the corner, lower ground floor apartment. Surrounded by a south-facing private garden with flat, green, manicured lawns to the side and a covered terrace with comfy rattan furniture to the front, the outdoors and the incredible views to the Langdales can be enjoyed whatever the weather. Inside the property you will find stunning Victorian stone windows, a lounge with a delightful inglenook fire place, three sumptuous bedrooms, (one with an ensuite), a family bathroom and a bright and welcoming kitchen diner. Named after the architect Thomas Muirhead who in addition to designing Applethwaite Hall was also responsible for the cricket Pavilions at Manchester Old Trafford and The Oval, this fabulously appointed apartment is sure to please. Accommodation in Detail. Upon opening the front door of Muirhead, you will be struck by the quality finish and the attention to detail that the owners have paid to create a luxurious and welcoming retreat. Accessed via the main Applethwaite Hall entrance Muirhead is on the lower ground floor accessed via an internal stairway. The beautifully furnished lounge is a charming room in which to relax and unwind with comfortable sofas and armchairs, large feature windows, feature fireplace, large screen 3D Smart TV and an integrated Bluetooth sound system. The contemporary kitchen is very well equipped with a solid oak Ercol dining table, white quartz surfaces and high spec Neff oven, microwave, fridge freezer, washer dryer, dishwasher and the highest quality inventory with everything you could need from the Le Creuset breakfast ware to the white Kenwood kMix. Muirhead offers three superb bedrooms, all with quality oak furniture and local artwork. The spacious and comfortable master bedroom features a super-king size bed, beautiful Morris and Co wallpaper and is complemented by a luxurious ensuite shower room complete with Villeroy and Boch fittings. Of the two further bedrooms one is a light and bright kingsize room with views of the Langdale Pikes from the statement window and the other a delightful twin bedded room with a 32 inch TV. Local guides, books and maps are dotted throughout the property and the many thoughtful touches such as a drying cabinet for wet walking gear and a compacting bin in the kitchen demonstrate a real consideration to making your stay in this property as enjoyable and easy as possible. Stepping outside there is a sheltered patio offering lovely views across the private garden to the secluded woodlands beyond with its family of deer, many birds and squirrels. The addition of a quality powder coated steel dining set makes this the perfect place to dine al fresco. At the front of the property you will find a large sheltered terrace complete with comfortable rattan furniture allowing you to relax and enjoy the stunning vista of the south Lakeland fells whatever the weather. Beyond the terrace lies the extensive, mature and landscaped grounds of the hall which guests are free to enjoy. Accessed via the main Applethwaite Hall entrance the Muirhead is a ground floor apartment accessed via an internal stairway. Private parking is available for two cars with additional parking for visitors. For guests with bikes there is a covered, lockable bike store. Location Applethwaite is an enviable location; easily reached by car or by train and perfectly placed to explore Windermere village, Bowness, Lake Windermere and all the Lake District has to offer. Windermere is a lovely place to make yourself at home with an abundance of cafés, restaurants and traditional Lake District pubs to choose from and plenty of shops for stocking up the kitchen. A number of superb walks begin nearby, including the easy ascent of Orrest Head which promises spectacular views to Lake Windermere from the top. There are also many National Trust and other historic properties and gardens to enjoy near at hand including the 400 year old farmhouse at Townend, Holehird Gardens (the home of the Lakeland Horticultural Society) and the beautifully restored Arts and Crafts house, Blackwell For touring by car, you'll find Windermere a great place to start.
