Even in the context of the Lake District, Longsleddale, a mere twelve minutes from Kendal and twenty-five from Windermere, is recognized as outstandingly peaceful and stunningly beautiful.
As you travel up the valley, in parallel with the River Sprint, you step back in time, passing traditional farmhouses, a much-loved church an idyllically situated swimming hole and majestic fells. You will get a real sense of the valley's traditional community consisting of some eighty people and several thousand sheep. Perhaps it is not surprising that Longsleddale should have been the inspiration for the Postman Pat books!
Todd Fell Cottage at Low House Farm is a high quality and homely barn conversion that has been created by the owners to enable guests to share the experience of living in one of the most tranquil places in Britain. Presented with the bedrooms and living accommodation all on the ground floor, the cosy lounge, kitchen and bedroom have all been carefully planned to offer the very best views of the surrounding countryside.
There is plenty of wildlife - roe deer, red deer, badgers, rabbits, hares and even the occasional red squirrel. Ravens nest on the crags, wrens in the stone walls, while woodpeckers, jays nuthatches tits and finches thrive in the woods. Buzzards, kestrels and owls hunt here and herons fish the river where kingfishers, dippers, wagtails or goosanders can also be seen. Several miles of the Sprint are designated SSSI and contain white-clawed crayfish. Todd Fell Barn itself lies at the heart of a working farm that supports a flock of rough fell sheep – an ancient Lakeland breed. The walking is magnificent – straight out of the barn back door, up Todd Fell and on to all the fells beyond.

Cross the patio and walk round to the side of the cottage and the front door opens to a beautiful, dual triple aspect lounge that bright and flooded with light. The windows frame the beautiful landscape of Longsleddale and the cosy log burning is a welcome treat on a winters evening. The room is furnished with a comfortable sofa and armchair, a family dining table and smart TV. Step straight out of the lounge and onto the patio and you will know instantly why this is the ideal place to relax with a drink on a summers evening.
The high quality fitted kitchen includes an electric hob and oven, dishwasher and fridge with freezer box.
The bedroom is a welcome retreat at the end of the day with a super kingsize bed and a luxury ensuite bathroom with bath with shower other, basin and WC.
The inner hallway links provides additional hanging area for clothes and the utility cupboard is home to the washer/drier.
To the front there is parking for one car. Access to Todd Fell is via a private track from the road which is suitable for all but the lowest sports cars however additional care should be taken particularly the winter months as this track is not gritted or salted.
Longsleddale lies in the south east of the Lake District a few miles north of Kendal off the A6. The M6 is conveniently close. Coming from the south Todd Fell Barn is twenty minutes from junction 36 and from the north ten miles south of junction 39 at Shap. Oxenholme-Lake District mainline railway station is also twenty minutes away. From Oxenholme there is a branch line to Kendal, a journey of about five minutes.
Kendal is an old market town of great charm with a fine art gallery, a cinema and many restaurants and shops including Marks and Spencer and Booths. Morrison's, on the A6 just north of Kendal, is the closest supermarket about ten minutes away.
The adjacent valley of Kentmere is well worth exploring, as is the ravishing Lythe Valley with its many delightful pubs. On wet days nearby places of interest to visit are Blackwell, an Arts and Crafts house on the shores of Windermere, and the Dove Cottage at Grasmere where the poet Wordsworth lived with his family. Apart from the Lake District itself, Longsleddale is an excellent location from which to explore the Yorkshire Dales and Hadrian's Wall.
